New-Old Bimmer Moves Forward

(Real 507 nose.)

I mentioned that the fabrication shop, Vescio’s Customizing and Restorations, is building my friend Bill a “tribute” BMW 507, arguably the company’s most beautiful car. The base vehicle is an MGA, but its front and rear ends will be modified to closely resemble the wonderful late-’50s German roadster.

I love good fabrication! The MG has been completely stripped and now, with lots of photos for reference, Bo Vescio, Ryan Ladda and Mike Jenson are working their magic, cutting, bending, shaping and welding sheet steel to transform an English design into a German one.

This is a fun car and a great project. I’ll keep ya posted.

Yeah–amazing how nicely the MGA works as the basis for one, too. There are definite differences, but the core–the area between the wheels, is pretty similar.

We’ve talked before on the site about how cars from particular eras tend to be so similar, even though designers can always resort to a clean sheet if they wish….

Looks like they’re getting a pretty accurate front bumper going too.

A tricky part–and one that will really complete the look–is the swage line that comes off the top of the front wheel well and runs backward, as well as the “gills.”

They’re marked in the top photo if you look closely.

What appears to be a green line off the right front wheel well?

They’re doing a real nice job. What color? Red, I hope. It needs to be red.

The green line is the swage line–the ridge adding some dimension and sense of separation between the top and bottom portions of the side sheet metal.

Good photo of it here: http://www.supercars.net/Pics?viewCarPic=y&source=carGal&carID=164&pgID=1&pID=603929

Not sure on color. Bo Vescio said with projects like this, customers often run through a host of color ideas before settling on one. I think Bill showed me this photo as one color he liked (looks good to me too): http://www.cromoclassico.com/eng/villaeste2005/43_g.jpg
