Naming Convention

I was just looking at the list of 2006 Top 100 Baby Names from babycenter.com and amazed how the trends swing.
In the 70’s our grade school roll call was full of Jennifers, Kathys/Cathys, Davids and Tims. Then I scan this top 100 list and there is nary a Mary, one of the most popular girls names for decades. And so the naming pendulum swings. Ava, Olivia, Aiden, and Logan are just a few of the latest hot names.
Oh the stress of naming a child. I felt it was a daunting task coming up with a name. The name needs to fit the baby, it might even shape and mold their future personality. Benjamin had been Vivian up until we saw his dangling participle on the ultrasound monitor. That threw us for a complete loop as we were certain he would be a she. We had to change gears. Benjamin was always near the top of our list but he was still “baby boy” until the day we left the hospital. We just had trouble committing.
One thing I got hung up on is “what will his initials spell?” What if he wants to get something monogrammed someday? I don’t want it his initials to be embarrassing. With our last name “K” it can’t be Ivan Christopher (ICK), Edward Evan, (EEK), Yosef Ulysses (YUK). And well, there are a host of others I won’t even go into with a family oriented blog. Although we had fun coming up with naughty name combinations that we would never use. My favorite initial combination? Andrew Owen - then he would be… AOK.
Guess we’ll have to save that one in our back pocket in case Ben ever gets a baby brother.
