The Mom Before the Storm

I admit it, I was right there along with everyone else late Friday IMG_0546_2.JPGafternoon rushing around stocking up before the storm. I waited in long lines at the grocery store that rivaled the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I was running desperately low on Pampers and Pedialyte - two major must haves when you have a baby with the dreaded stomach bug. I wasn’t going to chance fate by having to bundle him up and take him to the store with me to get more over the weekend.

I was in the Southdale area and originally thought I’d just run to Target for my precious provisions. Suddenly I felt like I was in a bad 90’s B-movie. “Dude….Where’s my Target?” The entire block was a giant hole and a dirt pile. Wuh? It was incredibly discombobulating. I looked left, I looked right - was I in the right place? All of the other landmarks were there but no bullseye. I later found out it’s becoming “Super” - hence the hole. This apparently happened in January. Where have I been? As I claim a few different Targets to be “my Targets”- I missed out on this moving one.

So, on to plan B - the grocery store. As long as I was there, eh, I might as well buy bags and bags of comfort food. A weekend like this was made for the mother of all MN casseroles Tater Tot Hot Dish.  Such a cliche punch line yet it is so darn good - you betcha.

So the weekend was spent indoors with leftovers and the *yawn* Oscars last night. Any snowy weekend stories to share?

I went jogging on Saturday around Lake Calhoun when the snow was really coming down. The air was really fresh.
I didn’t stock up on food. They were only predicting 8 to 18 inches of snow. I remember the day when we’d get 2 or 3 feet in one night and we didn’t go out stocking up.

We had a great snowy weekend planned…got “March of the Penguins” for our 2 1/2 year old son and had a special treat–eating dinner in front of the TV and having smoothies! We don’t watch a lot of TV so this is always exciting for him. Then we hoped for some cozy sleeping in on Sunday morning.

So much for that! On Saturday afternoon, he was injured…not seriously enough to warrant the emergency room; just serious enough to say, let’s take a look at it in the morning and see what happens. In the morning, he was still in pain, so we dug out of the 8-10 inches in our driveway at 7:30 a.m. and got to Urgent Care…to find that he had a dislocated elbow!

Apparently extremely common in toddlers (common enough to have a nickname: Nursemaid’s Elbow); and luckily, easily fixable. We were soon on our way and he was none the worse for wear.

But hardly the cozy, snuggling-in weekend we had hoped to have…! Maybe next snow storm. : )

The Southdale Target is my “back-up” Target, and I had no idea it had closed! SouthTOWN Target is “my Target,” and I love that there is nothing all that super about it. It reminds me of working at the Duluth Target (Target store #004) in late high school/early college, with its similar layout and feel. Anyway, thanks for the tip…not sure what this says about my life though (finding out a Target less than 5 miles from my house closed from reading a blog that is)!

Speant Sat night with four kids and husband at the Depot water Park in Mpls. The Marriot upgraded us to a 2 bed suite because they were “book up”. Thanks! Had a great time and celebrated our son’s 4th birthday. If you have younger kids you really should check it out. Great way to wash away the winter blues.

We had a great weekend. One set of grandparents was in to meet the new grandchild. Grandma made a bunch of food for the freezer, Grand-dad helped with the shoveling & everyone had a chance to get lots of quality baby-holding time. Mom even got out for a short bike ride - the first in about 8 months - on Friday, before the weather turned.

Congratulations bsimon! Sounds like you both are doing great. Your wife must have recovered quickly - Riding a bike would not have been high on my list after giving birth. :)

Why are people so afraid of snow now?

Kay, thanks. We’re going great. Norah was born nearly 3 weeks ago (by c-section), so the bike ride was after more than 2 weeks of recovery. And she’s a bike junkie.

Weekend was good here. Mother and sister in law came into town. We spent the weekend shopping for the soon to be grandson. I’m due in June, with our first, so we are having fun shopping for baby stuff.
The snow definetly didn’t scare us away from the malls and spending money! Even though I think my husband would have wished it had! OOpppsss!
Let’s hope this is the last of the “big” snow falls. Which I know is wishful thinking, but you never know

I am just reading this blog for the first time. We had a great time at home on the snow days, sledding down our front yard right into 18th Avenue. You might call that risky parenting behavior, but the snow plow was stuck at the bottom of the hill, so it was sweet sledding for my two boys.

This weekend I had to run my older kid out to a friend’s for a sleepover in the burbs. On my way back I decided to stop at the Target on 494 and Penn. THIS WAS A HUGE MISTAKE. It was exactly like Christmas shopping, which I hate. Everyone had been cooped up for several days and decided that they too needed to drop in at Target. As soon as I saw how discombobulated I was becoming (and cranky) I got back in the car and went home for a round of Blokus (and a beer, but i am probably not supposed to say that in light of the “momtini” scandal. Ah well. Scandal schmandal.
