Things that go boom

Happy Fourth of July, folks. This is the day my wife and I ponder whether we should take our kids out to see fireworks.

We always enjoy a good show of explosives, but we know it’s not for everyone, especially the younger types. Our 4-year-old claims she can’t wait to see fireworks this year, but in the past we’ve tempered her wide-eyed wonder with shut-eyed, clenched-fist terror. Pretty colors + loud noises = shuddering tot.

The 19-month-old girl seems to enjoy noise of all kinds, but will she handle the crowds? The darkness? Staying up past 10 p.m.?

Hey, it’a a day to celebrate and, for many of us, a day to feel that youthful awe under the lit-up sky.

I suppose we could find a place far away from the launch site and watch. Heck, we could stay home and call it an early night (by the way, this holiday in the middle of the week business stinks). Or we could go downtown and see what happens — leaving early is always an option.

I like that last idea. Besides, there will be a July 4 next year.
