Prenatal Exercise

Today we have a reader inquiry about exercise & pregnancy from Cribsheet reader, Kate.

Hi there! I’m trying to think ahead and stay fit (or at least build up some much needed endurance/cardio) while I’m pregnant and have been doing some searching for places that offer prenatal fitness classes, preferably in the Southeast metro (I’m in Apple Valley). I’m especially interested in water/pool-based fitness. Any suggestions?

I too am trying to stay on the ball with fitness again this pregnancy. I can attest that exercising throughout my last pregnancy definately helped my stamina and endurance for a long labor.

I try to walk 30-45 minutes during my lunch hour or after work with the family and dog. It’s a win/win for everyone. Peter and I get to catch up from the day, Ben gets more beloved outdoor time, and Chloe can burn off some of those extra calories from “vacuuming up” under the high chair.

And Kate, this isn’t in your neck of the woods, but I also recommend the prenatal yoga class at the Mpls Yoga Workshop in South Mpls. I’m hoping to be able to find a regular babysitter so I can get back to this class ASAP! I miss it. It is a fantastic way to connect with other pregnant moms and is taught by the fantastic midwife/yoga instructor, Clare. She is very knowledgeable and customizes the poses to best suit pregnancy and your individual needs. I was a regular and looked forward to the 90 minutes each week to relax and just focus on my growing baby. Plus it definately helped with my with flexibilty and breathing during labor. And I swear that is why Ben sleeps in “childs pose” and is prone to do random “downward dogs”.

Along with Kate, I am interested in your recommendations for prenatal exercise classes. What did you do? And where did you go?
