“That’s Not Our Grocery List…That’s Our Baby!”

A lot of you new moms out there probably got or are getting the popular weekly newsletter- “Your pregnancy this week…” e-mailed from babycenter.com. Each week this e-mail updates you with information on your growing baby. You become enlightened (and perhaps frightened) by new terms like “Lanugo” and “Vernix.”
But the part that always amused me was each weeks comparison of the baby to grocery store produce. Early on - the embryo is compared to a lentil bean by week nineteen; a zucchini. In between you get, “This week….your baby is approximately the size of a: raspberry, kumquat, fig, jumbo shrimp, lemon, avacado, etc.. They stop at week twenty and switch to telling you how big your baby is in plain old inches.
Seeing this as potential blog material - I started writing down each food of the week in my notebook. Peter happened upon it and said “What an odd grocery list. Is this for some recipe or something? Are you having wierd cravings or what?”
“That’s not our grocery list.” I said matter-of-factly. “That’s our baby!”
I had my notebook out at one day when my colleague MaryLou saw it sitting on my desk.
“Wow! Waaaaay too healthy!” she said. “C’mon! How about comparing the baby to something that pregnant women are really thinking about! Why not a Hostess Sno-ball instead of a lemon?
Why not indeed? So, here is my revised and re-tooled babycenter list with pregnancy cravings in mind:
Week Your Baby is the size of a:
4 Lentil Skittle
5 Raspberry Peanut M&M
6 Grape Godiva Truffle
7 Kidney Bean Swedish Fish (gummi, not lutefisk!)

11 Fig Fun Size Snickers
12 Lime Mini Donut
13 Jumbo Shrimp Steak Cut French Fry
14 Lemon Hostess Sno Ball
16 Avacado Filled Croissant
17 Large Onion Make that…a Bloomin’ Onion
18 Large Sweet Potato Pint of Dove Ice Cream

In honor of the upcoming Great Minnesota Get-Together I had to throw in a few State Fair favorites. …Speaking of the State Fair. May & I will be out at the Star Tribune State Fair Booth this year on Wednesday, August 29. Details to come. We look forward to finally meeting you if you are out and about by the grandstand!
How about you - do you have any craving substitutions to add to the list above?
