The Mother Project - Sunday 8/19

We like to pass along events in the Twin Cities that we think our readers will enjoy. One such show that may resonate with many of you is happening this Sunday - “The Mother Project” at Open Eye Figure Theatre in South Minneapolis. It is a performance theater piece developed by Darcey Engen, a professor in the Theatre Arts Department at Augsburg College.
Some of Darcey’s biggest frustrations as a new mother were the “Why didn’t anyone tell me about this?” moments. “The books we read to prepare you for motherhood don’t talk about feelings of isolation even with a supportive partner, or the midnight feedings, walking the floor where you feel like you are the only person in the world going through this.” When she first shared the stories inspired from her experiences she found that no matter how personal her struggles seemed - they were incredibly universal.
This Sunday’s performance evolved from a group of women Darcey gathered together over a year ago. The group met almost weekly to write about their individual journey of motherhood. She took them through writing exercises and often found similarities in their stories as mothers no matter how diverse their experiences.
In “The Mother Project” the writers will share their personal stories that evolved from these meetings - many of which are interwoven in this performance. Just a few topics that will be touched on in this show are:
The “Bad Mother” - the things we do in desperation; terminal illness, children, struggles, generational issues, racism, relationships and childcare.
“The Mother Project”. This Sunday 8/19 3pm @ Open Eye Figure Theatre, 506 E 24th Street, Minneapolis. (near Portland & 35W) Tickets are $8 at the door. The performance is about 1 hour long. It will be followed by a wine & cheese reception and a discussion lead by Nanci Oleson of Mombo.org, who is also performing in the production.
