Who Should Raise Our Kids?

Today we had a reader pose an excellent question about how to decide “Who will take care of the kids if something tragic were to happen?”

We’re having a hard time deciding who to appoint as the guardian for our child. We have different parenting philosophies than some of the obvious choices
(our siblings) and worry about burdening our parents who may be up to the task now but might not be a good long term choice over our child’s lifetime if, god forbid, something were to happen to us.  And it seems like such a huge thing to ask of friends. I’d really like to hear how others have dealt with this issue.

A nightmare to think about - but an important decision. My husband and I have discussed it but haven’t made the next steps to working with a lawyer to get it formalized. Have you written up a will and how did you decide who would be a guardian?
