Tis the Season

So my attempt to watch “What would Jesus buy?” - the satirical documentary featuring Rev. Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping was thwarted first by the snowstorm a week ago and then again this weekend by the fact that the movie had, well, closed after less than a week at the Edina Theater.
This upset me no end, especially since I was going with Jackie Crosby, the paper’s retail reporter, and H.J. Cummins, who covers consumer affairs, both of whom have particular perspectives into our culture of consumption. Me? I was just going as a mom heading into that shopping freefall known as the holiday season.
So, we, er, headed to brunch instead.
Good thing Maria Elena Baca did some pondering for us, in this thoughtful piece in the Strib over the weekend on shopping at a time of Chinese safety scares, global warming and just plain guilt.
