A Water Birth Story

Emily the Masseuse is back from maternity leave! And being the multi-tasker she is, she regaled me with her water birth story as she kneaded the knots out of my back.

May: I want to hear everything.

Emily: Oh, it was just a-ma-zing. It was at Hudson Hospital. The tub was about thigh-high when I stood up. Clementine was in it with me and it came up her chest.

May: Clementine was in the tub?!

Emily: Oh yeah. She was really, really sweet and she touched my arm when I wanted her to and when I didn’t want her to, she left me alone.

May: How old is Clementine again?

Emily: Three and a half.

May: O My God, I’m just thinking of trying to give birth with my then two-year-old next to me….

Emily: She’s really into gross-out stuff. My dad was flaying fish the other night and she was just watching and asking ‘What’s that red stuff?’

May: How long were you in labor?

Emily: I woke up with contractions at 2am and Wesley was born at noon. Considering I was in labor for two days with Clementine, this was not bad!

May: You didn’t have a water birth with Clementine. Did you have drugs?

Emily: Just at the end. A little Nubain. I was sooo tired.

May: And this time?

Emily: No, no. I tell you, May, I stood up in the tub just twice during the labor and each time I sat down again, the pain was halved. When Wesley was born, I was floating on my back. We’re not planning any more kids, so I’m glad we ended on such a wonderful experience.

May: You’re making me want to have another baby just so I can have a water birth.
