That New Baby Smell?

Here’s an article that the new trend in cologne is a “note” of baby powder.

New? Were these people not in drugstores in the late 1970’s ?  Who didn’t have a bottle of Love’s Baby Soft?loves.jpg

It could be found on the shelf just to the left of the liter of grandma’s favorite Jean Nate and between other popular perfumes of the day  - Lemon Up and Charlie.

It was on the shelf above Bonne Belle Lipsmackers, across from “Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific!”, Body on Tap (there’s beer in it ..but don’t drink it!”) and Prell - (I used to be flat - but now I’m fluffy!).

I’m letting my true Gen X colors show. Anyone else have any Bicentennial era drugstore items to add to the above list?

I was a lover of the perfume Exclamat!on (I think that’s where the exclamation point went)…I’m sure my parents hated it! I also LOVED the Baby Soft:)

But who actually USES baby powder on their babies? I dutifully bought a bottle when I had my daughter 7 years ago and I still have it.

I think you got all my favorite 70’s products already. Good list.

I always wanted Babe perfume, as glamorously advertised by the lovely Margaux Hemingway.

I loved Verve (sp?) perfume. My best friend loved Electric Youth perfume. It was awful–I can still smell it.

New baby smell? They chose baby powder but the real new baby smell is of milk and poop.

(Here we go with the poop talk again.)

Who can forget Aquanet hairspray? I wonder what sort of long term damage we did to ourselves and the ozone layer using that!?!

This is probably from the 80’s or early 90’s but I believe my favorite perfume was Malibu Musk. :) (I also had Love’s Baby Soft though!)

Hey Lucie, I love good old J&J baby powder. My husband worries it will give the babies asthma so I only do it rarely and secretly. I also like the smell of J&J baby shampoo on the girls. On the non-baby front, does anybody remember lovely, citrus-y Sunnydrop shampoo?

What about Dippity Do - I think if I smelled that green goop today it would take me back to a memory of setting my hair on giant rollers. Did anyone else use Wella Balsam, I had to get my aunt, a hairdresser, to buy it for me.
My boyfirend’s Dad used to joke that his wife used hairspray with “SUPERNATURAL” hold- that is what the label said.

I will absolutely NEVER forget the Enjoli perfume jingle: “I can bring home the bacon…fry it up in a pan…and never ever let you forGET you’re a man…’cuz I’m a woman, Enjoli!”

I also vividly remember the Head and SHoulders commercials where they showed someone scratching their head and everyone else around them was appalled because it was a sure sign they had dandruff. As a kid, it made a big impression…I was nervous about an innocent head scratch for years! Still think about it to this day every time I have an itch. : )

PS to LUCIE: Totally with you on the baby powder. I’ve never used it once!

Oh, does anyone remember Pert? I think it was Pert, at least. Anyway, the commercials had women jumping around with this glorious soft hair bouncing and flowing. I wanted that hair so bad.

Didn’t Pert Plus have shampoo and conditioner in one? That was a bomb.

And, baby powder. I never touched the stuff with kid #1. We use it all the time with kid #2, though. His butt needs it. We use J&J, but you can buy the talc free stuff. I think it’s just cornstarch. It might not have that sought after smell.
