Adoptees and Adjustment

Here’s something Cribsheeters may want to weigh in on. New research from the U says that adolescents who were adopted as infants are twice as likely to have behavioral problems as those who are not adopted.

Researcher Margaret Keyes found that among 692 adopted kids in the study, 14 percent had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder compared to 7 percent of the 540 kids in the non-adopted group. A small enough difference, but enough to raise an eyebrow or two.

She found no differences when it came to anxiety or depression, which are more internal.

No one knows for sure why this is so, but some theorize it has to do with a feeling of loss for the child.

There’s more on the story from reporter Josephine Marcotty on Bodytalk.
