Child’s Pose

My Ben will often go into spontaneous yoga poses. He’ll say “Cise! Mama, cise!” (toddlerspeak for exercise). Downward dog is a big fave.  I’ll also catch him doing mountain pose, and the trickier tree pose. He caught on to these kid friendly positions while watching me do a yoga dvd over the winter.

When I saw this article in Wednesday’s Star Tribune, it piqued my interest. There is a new curriculum called Yoga Calm that is being introduced into several kindergarten classes in Minneapolis. “Much of the program focuses on the core yoga principles of stillness, listening, grounding, strength and community.” The goal is to help the children settle down and focus.

On a related note: I recently read about a new yoga studio called Blooma in Edina. The studio seems focus on prenatal yoga but also has postnatal classes for mom & baby, and tots. I’m interested in signing my little yogi up since he’s seems to be into it.  Plus focus, flexibility, balance, and calm aren’t bad results either.

Afterall, there’s no place like om.

Anybody out there have kids in kindergarten who have participated in Yoga Calm? Have you taken yoga classes with your baby/toddler? Report back to us!
