Beauty in the Mundane

Peter and I were married eight years ago yesterday.

Just the two of us starting out.

Prior to our wedding we had taken the requisite “couples compatibility” test given by our church.

At the time starting a family was dead last on both of our lists of priorities.

I was reminded of how much our lives have changed since that day.

Yesterday morning all four of us were jammed in the bathroom.

Peter and I brushing away at our teeth. Elbows knocking.

Ben with his arms wrapped around my knees.

Vivian in the crook of Peter’s arm looking luminous and round

just like 9 month old baby’s do.

The four of us reflected in the mirror.

A full-fledged family.

#1 priority on both of our lists.

And it is so fantastic.

No fancy anniversary dinner with wine and candles.

Just a late summer evening trip to DQ for all of us.

The traditional 8th anniversary gift is apparently “bronze.”

(I had to google that)

For us… it was soft serve.

And it was lovely.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! It’s the “simple things” in life isn’t it? Though I don’t know what’s so simple about being a parent to two little ones…
For our anniverary this past May - we went on a family walk around the neighborhood and reflected on how far we’d come as well -
Here’s to many many many many more wonderful years together!

Happy Anniversary! Sounds like how our anniversaries are. We celebrated our 8th year anniversary in March. We also have two kids (4 year old, 18 month old). We got married when we were both 20 and still in college and kids were far on our list too.

My 8th wedding anniversary was yesterday, too. :) Happy Anniversary! And yep, we didn’t celebrate either as I was in bed with a nasty stomach bug but probably wouldn’t go out anyway as we have 2 little girls and would much rather spend time as a family. That’s the best anniversary present of all, if you ask me. :)

That is a lovely visual.

Anniversaries are important. We’re coming up on our 8th ourselves and every year we look at each other and congratulate us ourselves on beating the odds. (We married when our first child was 4 mos. old. No long engagement, no church counseling.)
We’ve been through a lot like many cribsheeters - learning to parent, 2 moves, a deployment, some job loss and gain… - and it is great to have that “institutional history” with a person.

And I’ve had front row seats to the divorce alternative - and while marriage is way hard, splitting up a family seems harder.

Lovely post - those are my favorite kind to read - simple but bright moments in familyhood.

This really is lovely, Kay. For our 6-year anniversary two weeks ago, the family went out to Punch Pizza and the toddler fell asleep on my husband’s chest.

That’s beautiful, Kay. It feels very real to me, too. Happy anniversary!

That is exactly what we did for our 6th Anniversary this past July. We spent the day at the pool with the kids, grilled that night and then hit up DQ before our 2 guys went to bed. I wouldn’t have changed one second!
