The Virtual Shoebox

If you’re anything like me you might have a stack of shoeboxes full of old photos.  Or if you’re really like me you have piles and piles of them.  I’m not a “scrapper”.  I was recently lamenting my photo chaos when I couldn’t find a bunch of classic high school photos for a project for my friend’s 40th. They’re somewhere in a Nike box in my storage room but - where? I haven’t a clue.  I was able to send along every digital photo I had - but the really good big-hair shots? No go. I have one friend who was horrified at my photo disorganization. How could I have not detailed my life  in scrapbooks?  Year by year - event by event - with punch outs, quotes,  stamps and decorative paper? Sorry, that’s just not my thing.

The past few years I’ve moved on to “cyber clutter”  I now have virtual shoeboxes online. Picasa, Shutterfly, Walgreens and Costco all hold my various photo stashes. They are collecting their own digital dustbunnies online. But at least they are only a mouse click away.

But when I finally roll up my sleeves and dive into it -watch out! I will make an online photobook or video that will knock your socks off. (or at least mine).  Instead of baby books  or scrapbooks I have started making annual photo DVD’s with music. The site of my choice is currently www.onetruemedia.com   I’ve done 50th Anniversary DVD’s for each set of grandparents, Ben’s first year, a photo video montage of 2007, and am currently working on Vivian’s first year. I just click and drag and sync up the photos to some meaningful music that was the soundtrack of our year.  Easy-peasey.  They are fun to watch and I can always order a new one if the DVD gets lost or damaged.  I’m also anxious to try www.animoto.com I’ve seen some great videos made there as well.

Randy Salas wrote an article about all the options for digital photos earlier this week. You can read it here.

What do you do with all of your photos Cribsheeters? Any additional sites to share?
