American Girl Mania hits the MOA

Apparently, the gloomy economy didn’t stop hundreds of parents and kids from thronging the MOA for the opening of the American girl store Saturday.
$90 for a doll! Wow. But I was just glad to see a rare happy retail story from our retail reporter, Jackie Crosby. (Our editors must have felt the same way…they slapped the story on the front page of the Sunday paper.)
In Variety, Gail Rosenblum writes about grown women who are still obsessed with Molly, Felicity and Kit and there are cute pics of young fans by Jim Gertz at the opening.
Any Cribsheeters out there with a (not so) secret American Girl obsession?

I feel blessed that my daughter is content with reading the historical American Girl books and isn’t looking for an expensive doll for Christmas. Though the thought of doing the tea with mothers, daughters and dolls does sound appealing.
I wouldn’t say it’s an obsession, but I had a Samantha doll when I was young and I LOVED that doll. I can’t wait to pass her down to my daughter. My sister and I loved to change their clothes and display them in our rooms. Plus I loved the books because I love to read! They really are great dolls, even though they’re expensive.
I’m not obsessed with American Girl and my daughter’s too young to still know about them, but the $90 isn’t so insane if you think about how much people spend on video games! Buying my 8-year-old nephew a game for Christmas is a minimum $50 purchase and he and his brothers have a wide selection at home.
Elizabeth, what a great point about the cost of video games. My husband and I are not into video games at all, and I’m always really glad because the games cost so much! I’ve read a bunch of the comments on the various American Girl store articles, and people think the price is so ridiculous, but my 6 nieces all have these dolls and I have seen that they definitely get their money’s worth.
