Somebody Snitched on Me…

So, it’s official, Ben is at the age where he can bust me. It just happened for the first time last weekend.
I opened up the fridge to put something away and knocked over my beloved limited holiday edition “Peppermint Mocha” coffee creamer. I didn’t realize this until I opened up the fridge 30 minutes later. The entire contents of the bottle meandered down from the top shelf all the way to the vegetable crisper. A vast pool of slick and sticky peppermint cream covered the contents of both shelves below. OK, maybe I didn’t really need all of that sweet slippery hydrogenated palm kernel oil in my body. But, boy it sure is tasty in my coffee on a cold winter morn. Maybe it was a sign. I don’t know. But it was definitely a mess.
“Wow momma, that is messy.” Ben observed. “Is that milk?”
Sigh -
“No, coffee creamer.”
“Oh.” and he walked away while I got out bath towels to sop up the mess.
I did a good job too. Really good.
So good, that I didn’t feel the need to share the incident with Peter (aka Monk).
You see, my husband has a keen eye for detail and can detect the smallest change or deduce what happened while he was out just by scanning the room. It’s become a running joke with us. “Oh, Monk noticed this - or Monk noticed that…”
This wasn’t a big deal, and I chalked the creamer episode up as not worthy of sharing. Some things are just on a “need to know” basis. This was one.
But now, there is a talking toddler in the mix.
Later that evening Peter got home from work and opened the refrigerator.
“Look at that mess daddy!” Ben exclaimed.
“What mess? I don’t see anything.” (that made me do a silent “score!”)
“Mommy spilled the coffee creamer. It was really messy”
He looked over at me and smiled big. “Really? I couldn’t tell.”
Monk didn’t notice.
Again - not a big deal - but it reminded me that kids do pay attention and share things you may not really want them to.
So - have you been busted or snitched on by your kids. Do tell, I bet there are some good stories out there!
