Mom’s Home

Those of you who don’t regularly delve inside the business section of the paper may have missed this - an AP story yesterday on moms who lost high-flying jobs and are now rediscovering life at home with their kids.
It’s a fascinating read on many levels - not just because the lead example is Geralyn Lucas, a former TV executive, author of “Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy” and someone I went to Columbia journalism school with. She talks about how - recently laid off - she got lost taking her 2-year-old to his playgroup. When she took her kid to the pediatrician’s, nurses didn’t recognize her since they’re used to seeing the nanny.
I work (for now, fingers crossed!) and my husband stays home with the kids. So I’ve certainly had similar embarrassing incidents. “Mom’s here today,” my little ones’ daycare teachers used to say in a certain tone (maybe just in my mind, maybe not) on the rare occasions I dropped them off. And I’ll admit to taking a wrong turn trying to get to my daughters’ new preschool….even though they’d been going there for six months….
Some of the newly-homebound Moms in the article found they were re-connecting with their kids in ways they didn’t even know they were missing.
One mom’s parting shot was especially poignant: “I don’t want to look back and say I squandered the time.”
