My Daughter, the Individual

Notice anything odd about the picture above?
Yes, well, this is how Maya has been insisting on wearing this dress. I mean, I believe my three-year-old should be allowed to express herself and all but this is ridiculous.
When she wanted to wear it thus to the Walker on Friday, I put my foot down.
NO, I said. She screamed. No, I repeated. She screamed some more. I grabbed the dress and put it away, far out of reach. More screaming. Finally, she put it on the “right” way and we headed out the door.
Which when you think about it, was a silly fight for me to have with her because the Walker is all about thought-provoking art anyway.
And what’s more provocative than a dress worn back-to-front for effect? I’m suppressing the genius of my little Frida Kahlo, that’s what I’m doing.
The next time she tried to wear the dress, she ran to Daddy. Because Daddy lets me wear it like this.
The look of triumph
