You know we can’t go too long without talking baby names on Cribsheet. It IS a major decision (and fun to discuss).
Here are a few recent articles.

This article appeared in today’s Star Tribune -
Top Baby Names in Minnesota in 2008 Ethan and Ava are tops up here in Minnesota.

Just saw this post.
Top 10 Baby Naming Mistakes

Which led me to this fun and comprehensive baby name site.
www.nameberry.com

Check it out, it has interesting lists like:

Boys Names Dads Like More than Moms
Names With No Nicknames
Cool Middle Names
Old Lady Cool Names
Names Sure to Shock Grandma

And local author/baby name guru, Bruce Lansky recently wrote this article on storknet.com and was quoted in the Pittsburgh Tribune here.

Expecting parents - what names are you considering?
Or those with kids - how did you make your decision?
Curious - how many of you couldn’t decide and brought home “Baby Boy” or “Baby Girl” when you left the hospital?

With my son we just liked the name Parker and then gave him my maiden name for his middle name. This time around we are going with:
Boy: Jackson Thomas (Jackson we just like and Thomas after my dad; both boys will have a family name from my side)

Girl: Eva Linnea (both family names; my Great-Grandmother from my dad’s side and the middle name of my Great-Aunt from my mother’s side)
We thought it was important to somehow give our kids family names, especially after my son got my maiden name as a middle name.

@Erin, our older son’s middle name is Parker. I knew I wanted him to have the same initials as his dad, so they are both JP’s. However, we couldn’t settle on a boys P name until Parker came up and my husband’s eyes lit up…”Peter Parker!” Yeah, I guess technically we named our son after a superhero.

We did leave them before we left the hospital, but it took at least 24 hours for each one. We were very undecided!

But our criteria were simple: 1) Needs to be a name that has a shorter form for everyday use; 2) Needs to have a family name for middle name.

Ended up with:

1) William Peters (Called Will; middle name is grandmother’s maiden name)

2) Joanna Dorothy (Called Josie; middle name is great-grandmother’s name)

We did get crap from in-laws that you can’t get “Josie” from “Joanna”…apparently there’s some kind of law that says it has to be “Josephine” for “Josie.” And yes, we DO still hear about it regularly!

Whoops; that should say, “We did NAME them before we left the hospital”!!

Our favorite baby names have changed based on popularity. We wanted something not as common because my husband and I have really popular names and we were always 1 of 2 or 3 in our class. We love Jackson and wanted to name our first son that, but I kept hearing Jack everywhere I went. So we ended up naming him Maxwell and now I hear Max everywhere I go. Same with our daughter Zoe, we’ve loved the name forever and now it feels like I hear other kids with that name all the time. So we might go back to our original Jackson if we have another boy because it seems as soon as we decide we like something it increases in popularity anyway!

Kim @ I want a Minivan: Our kids should meet! We ended up with a nickname of “MJ” for our daughter. I didn’t realize it was Peter Parker’s girlfriend’s name until she was born. My husband knew right away but failed to mention it (I wouldn’t have changed it anyway). Our last name starts with an “A” so we didn’t want anything in our daughter’s name to start with or end with an “A” sound. We also wanted something easy to pronounce and not too common, but something people still know. Also, mine and my husband’s name both start with “L” so we wanted a different letter for her. We chose Mallory Jennifer. We loved the name Mallory and “Jennifer” is my sister’s name, the person who was a surrogate for us.

Kate, just don’t call him Jack. We don’t plan on using a nickname with Jackson…I like the name too much and I do not like Jack at all.

I hate to even say this, but Jackson was/is on my short list if we ever have a 3rd and it’s another boy. Maybe 5 years from now (when I project we have a house with more than 2 bedrooms and can have a 3rd) it won’t be as popular.

It took us over 24 hours in the hospital before we finally decided on which name we liked. My husband is a JR. but we didn’t want our son to be the III. Since we had a hard time deciding we kept our second favorite name as his middle name and then my husband wanted to add his middle name as a second middle name.

We ended up with Keegan Austin-Everette. Keegan is a bit unique but not too exotic. We have actually met 4 other small children with the same name, we never thought we would.

We really like the names Liberty Marie– aka Libbie or Loghan Lane– aka Lola. But we will cross that bridge if we ever get there. We have been ttc for 13 months now with no success and who knows if it would be a girl anyway.

Oh wow. Lots of Jackson’s! That is our name if we have another boy. I’ve been in love with that name since the movie Steel Magnolia’s.

I have three kids - all named before we left the hospital and we do not use family names.
1st Boy - Wyatt Blake
Girl - Sabrina Claire
2nd Boy - Quinn Everett
I love their names and like that they are not too popular.
