A Berry Good Day

Sunday was a glorious day to go strawberry-picking. So we did.

My husband (the planner) called ahead. One farm said they had a long line of cars waiting to get in. Another said their fields were pretty picked over and to come back another day.

We ended up at Lorence’s Strawberries just outside Northfield.

It was perfect. No wait. Just drive right up and park.

Nothing but blue sky, strawberry fields, a table and a set of scales.

(As you Cribsheeters know from my previous zoo post, I like my outings simple with no side shows.)

One of several perky young people gave us a cardboard box and assigned us a row. They demonstrated how to sweep aside the leaves to find the berries. Slip the strawberry stem between two fingers. Cup the strawberry in your palm. Then pull.

We came home with 8 pounds of sweet and juicy fruit, with none of that forced ripened texture of the grocery store variety. And you can’t beat $1.50 a pound.

Of course, there’s always one member of the family who won’t eat any.

Here’s Little Miss Picky.

Any fave strawberry farms? Where do you go?

Berry Hill Farm
They have very good sweet strawberries. It is a very well run berry patch.
They are located 1 mile east of Nowthen Blvd on 185th north of Anoka.

Am planning to go there this weekend matter o’ fact! I’ve heard both Lorence’s and Berry Hill Farm are good. Hope this doesn’t create a rush.

Bauer’s in Champlin is awesome and they’ve got blueberries (soon) as well - not to mention the best sweet corn in the metro area.

Steve’s Strawberries in Morris, Minneosta. Been around forever. Friendly people, clean picking rows, better berries than the city!

Berry Hill Farm in Burns/Nowthen is great! I was there on Saturday and got 20 pounds. Made jam like a madman. Follow the berry signs; it’s worth the drive. It’s a great pumpkin patch in the fall, too.

Hillside Farm in Dassel. A great way for us to get good berries, close-to-home and support a local business and the students they employ. Good apples and Christmas trees too! Small town at its finest.

I would like to put in a plug for Sam Kedem farm in Hastings. I searched far and wide for pick-your-own in the South Metro area that does NOT use chemicals/pesticides on their produce and this is the only one I found.

The also have an awesome store where they sell free-range eggs and homemade jellies, organic seeds, and a full nursery line for landscaping needs.
Check them out!
