Things to Do

We Interrupt This Blog…

…to plug a new web site we’re hanging a lot of hope on - Savethestrib.com

Like metro newspapers everywhere, the Strib is in financial trouble. For us who work here, it’s a surreal experience.

The company has filed for bankruptcy. Yet we come in everyday still fired up about the next story (for Kay and me, that would be the next blog post!)

If the Strib goes away, so do blogs like Cribsheet…

So…take a look. Coincidentally (or not) my story is the latest entry under “Meet the Strib.” Leave a comment. Better still, if you’re on Facebook, let your Friends know.

Easter weekend is coming up and looks like the weather will be decent for a few egg hunts and being outside.

We did several rites of spring last weekend such as the requisite…

Here’s a list from Mpls Parks & Rec for Easter egg hunts and events going on around the city.

Of course there are the Farm Babies at the Minnesota Zoo.

Macy’s Flower Show is also an annual favorite.

Dayclubbing with Mom Culture

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Home with baby and craving culture, New York transplant Lenore Moritz started Mom Culture, a regular arts outing for parents of young ones in the Twin Cities. (Yes, she’s blogged on Cribsheet before.) The best part is you can bring you kids along and nobody bats an eyelid if they start to cry in the middle of a concerto. This week, she’s introducing a new concept…

Dayclubbing is what I like to call it. It’s like nightclubbing except the drink special is a milk-filled sippy cup and your diaper bag has taken over the space once occupied by that little purse that held just your cash and lipstick.  After all, every good clubbing experience involves a trusty, energetic sidekick.

Dayclubbing is what’s happening at the Mom Culture event this Thursday, March 12: live music from a great band, (Batak Tribe ); dancing (optional), fun people (definitely), kids (both wild and mellow) and a chance for you to feel energized and find balance. Your interests count and you have permission to be unapologetic for needing your fix of adult music, arts and performance! (See www.momcultureonline.com for more details)

I found the band for Thursday’s concert while scanning the club listings — the leader of the group played the Dakota Jazz Club last week. Because Batak Tribe is largely comprised of international musicians, they bring fresh experiences to the stage and a unique sound that will transport us to far-off, definitely warmer and more tropical places. This concert will be my spring break!

No need to “dress to impress” — we’re all just moms looking for good music, a fun vibe and a chance to reconnect our inner-grown up.

Sign up for Mom Culture’s newsletter or keep checking the site to stay up to date on what’s upcoming.

Midtown Global Market

Friday, February 27th, 2009

The streets are plowed - the snow has stopped falling (for now) - need a new place to combat cabin fever get out of the house? Molly Hermann has a suggestion for tonight…

Have you been to the Midtown Global Market yet? To be honest, I did not know just how fun it is for families until I started renting a kitchen there for my catering business. My 3 year old always wants to go to ‘Mommy’s Kitchen’ now that there is so much to see and do! There is always music or special performances of some kind going on, and the food choices can please even the most disparate of family diners (think everything from pizza to ceviche).

Friday nights are Family Night, where they have special music for the kids complete with dance floor. And watching kids dance is entertainment in itself. This Friday, however, something really cool is happening. Midtown Global Market is having a Pep Rally to kick off the re-modeling of their Kid’s Play Area. Did I forget to mention the play area? Free Play Area. Perfect for getting out the energy during these indoor months. And it’s about to get a shiny new make-over with your kids’ help!

Come to Midtown Global Market on Friday, February 27th from 5-7pm to kick-off the remodeling for the GLOBAL KIDZ ZONE! Your children can be involved in decorating the space! Schedule of Events: 5:00pm-7:00pm: Radio Disney Road Crew will be onsite with Music, Games and Prizes for EVERYONE! 6:00pm: Check Presentation to Midtown Global Market from “You Gotta Have Heart” Auction and Fundraiser held earlier this month. 6:10pm: Guest Speakers TBD 6:20pm: Kids’ Parade to the new Midtown Global Market Kidz Zone led by Radio Disney 6:30pm: Kids’ hand-print painting on the Global Kidz Zone pillars!

And after you’ve had fun, come back again. This place really is great for the whole family. Visit Midtown Global Market for more information and directions.

Molly Herrmann is a Minneapolis based personal chef, caterer and writer. She owns Tastebud, housed in the Midtown Global Market, and writes her own blog at www.tastebudtart.com.

Poster Child

obamicon_sample.gif

I know I’m late to the party on this one. You’ve probably already seen this link flying around in e-mails or your Facebook page. You can customize your own poster in the style of the Shepard Fairey poster http://obamiconme.pastemagazine.com/

I like the baby with the “President 2065″ version.

I wanted to print one out for Ben’s third birthday and just put “THREE” at the bottom - alas - my color printer was down.

Then I got to thinking - how would you describe your child in one concise word?

Has anyone else Obamiconed a poster - what did it say?
