YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

Today’s Dollars & Sense column about mold and mildew odors in front-loading washing machines mentions that powdered detergent is better than liquid at keeping mildew at bay. But if you have fragrance sensitivities and want to find an unscented powdered HE detergent, you’re out of luck at the big box stores.
Target, Wal-Mart and Cub don’t sell a powdered unscented detergent for HE washers because Procter & Gamble doesn’t make one. The only place you’re likely to find such a product is at co-ops and health food stores. Meanwhile, let P & G know there is a need to be met in its dizzying array of products.  Â
Check out http://charliesoap.com, I have been using it for the last 5 years with good results.
Trader Joe’s offers one for only $8.99 which is even cheaper than the brands you would purchase at the other big box stores anyway.
We have been buying an HE unscented product (”KIND”) locally (pearsondistributing.com). They sell a product from a small canadian company called Winning Brands. Don’t know much else about either company, but the product works well.
Good luck on finding the unscented detergent. Arm & Hammer makes unscented detergent similar to the one sold at Menards and Target but NONE of the local stores carry the HE unscented. My husband has allegies to Tide and the oher scented detergents and I have to get my supplies online.
You do not need a special product to wash clothes in a front loading washer. I don’t have a front loader at home, but I do lots of laundry while traveling. I look for Wascomat front loaders set to do 2 washes & 3 rinses. For the 18 pound washers (W73, 74, 75) all it takes is 1/8 cup soap powder in each soap box on the machine. I use standard unscented Tide. For home front loaders, most are slightly smaller. You should not be using more than 1/8 cup of soap powder for a wash; if your water is softened–use even less soap. Suds DO NOT clean clothes–detergent assists the WATER in cleaning clothes.
Another option for those of you looking for detergent…
Watkins powder detergent comes in a 5-pound box (10 cups) for only $12.49, and with HE washers, only 1/8 of a cup is used, so you get a total of 80 loads per box, making its cost only 15.6 cents per load.
It is entirely dye- and fragrance-free. Additionally, it is 100% phosphate-free and biodegradable. It’s the most environmentally-friendly laundry detergent currently on the market.
The product can be found at http://www.watkinsonline.com/hodgeman and entering item number 06738. Otherwise, readers can call me at 763-442-3684 for more details.
Feel free to call or e-mail with any questions.
There is a reason why there isn’t powdered unscented HE detergent, it doesn’t work well in HE washers.
Although most HE washers have instructions to run powdered HE product it is not recommended on any machine I have seen or owned.
This is due to the fact the detergent is initially isolated from the clothing…it is then slowly mixed with water and added to the wash cycle strategically to maximize effectiveness/efficiency.
Powdered detergents do not mix properly with the design of most, if not all HE machines. In fact most HE machines require you to mix in water to the detergent tray when using powder to pre-dissolve the product.
If you need an unscented HE detergent for a good deal head over to Costco where they sell a liquid ‘free and clear’ HE detergent by their generic line for much less than I’ve found it anywhere else. Don’t try to get powder to work…you’ll waste your time and money and clog the detergent dispensing mechanism of your expensive front load washing machine.
Thank you John Ewodlt. Too bad this helps like 6 people.
In related “news” people with brown hair, 5′9″ to 5′10″, named “Thomas”, are no longer able to get fat free Wheat Thins at the SuperTarget, in Midway
Oh and I forgot to mention…if you want to prevent mold and mildew keep the door open after your wash cycle…it is as simple as that.
Some of the newer machines are designed to air out the machine when not in use…so you may not need to do this.
Hydrogen Peroxide seems to work better than bleach for cleaning an HE machine of mold and mildew (or you can use the more expensive Oxiclean which is essentially Hydrogen Peroxide). Although I wouldn’t use Hydrogen Peroxide as a detergent as it is unpredictable.
You don’t need to drive anywhere, saves all of the gas and time running store to store.
