YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
Whether you’re picking up flowers from the local supermarket on the way to see Mom or ordering them online, you want something nice without breaking the bank. On the low end, try Aldi’s Mother’s Day specials going on now. A tri-color bowl with petunias, geraniums, marigolds is only $8. A similar one from Home Depot is $15. Aldi also has Gerbera daisies or cyclamen in a pink pot for $5. A caveat: Aldi’s selection/quality varies from store to store and quantities are limited. By the way, Aldi’s prices on 6 roses is only $4 every day, but the quality is often poor. Buy two sets to make a dozen if they look good. No one sells roses cheaper, but buyer beware. Calling the store to check stock won’t work since Aldi stores don’t have published numbers. Locations can be found at the site.
Watch for deals from Cub and Rainbow’s floral departments too. Costco and Sam’s Club are good choices as well.
If you’re looking for a great local florist to do something stylish that doesn’t look anything like an arrangement found in a grocery store floral department, try Pazzobello in Minneapolis (612-825-8700). The non-traditional arrangements never fail to impress. On the other hand, if your mom loves carnations, you’re better off at the supermarket. Â
If you’re ordering online, try Proflowers.com. It won the Wall St. Journal’s test of online florists. I’ve used it myself and have always been satisfied. Â
I also ordered from Proflowers.com and did not receive the delivery on date promised. The sent the flowers free anyway but they were awful the receiver said. In the meantime I ordered from a local florist and the floors arrived within the time they told me and the receiver said they were beautiful.
Larry, thanks for relating your experience. I’ve ordered from Proflowers three or four times and had a good experience each time. What local florist did you use and do have any vested interest in them? Sorry, but a reporter always has to ask about conflicts of interest. FYI, when I order flowers locally for a story, I never use my name or credit card. Don’t want to get special treatment.
I would have to disagree with your advice. To save money, be sure to set a price range and the florist will always be willing to help. Support local flower shops in this tough economy.
Ellen, I completely agree w/ supporting a local flower shop! I live near St. Anthony Park and love the new flowers shop that opened recently! If you haven’t been Serendipity Flowers or called for a delivery, you are missing out! UNBELIEVABLE quality at a value that beats any shop I’ve been to in the Twin Cities. Sarah, the shop owner, does it all and she is fantastic! I spent $50 on flowers from Bachmann’s last year and I couldn’t believe how much more(and better quality) I got from Serendipity Flowers. Check it out if you haven’t been! http://www.serendipity-flowers.com
For $14.99, you get a huge bouquet of roses from Costco. I’ve NEVER been disappointed-they offer a large number of bouquets, multiple colors, and always very healthy. I’ll bet there are over 2 dozen stems in each bouquet.
Roger Beck Florist is the BEST! Their bouqets are beautiful and unique. They are very helpful and friendly.
I have received flowers from Proflowers and FTD Florists and was dissapointed in both. The FTD roses were black on the tips, one was broken, and there were only 11! I couldn’t get through on the 800 line and quit trying after 3 days. The Proflowers were okay, but not spectacular like the Roger Beck roses. I told my husband he never had to buy me flowers again they were so beautiful.
