A bakery lowers prices to compete with outlets

Dollars & Sense readers know that I’m a fan of the Lofthouse bakery outlet in Fridley, which sells artisan loaves for only $1 per loaf. Several varieties are brought out each weekday in the no-frills dive of an outlet. Despite the humble digs, the breads, rolls and cookies are all winners.

But if you can’t make it to Fridley during the week (Lofthouse is closed weekends), try Franklin Street Bakery in Minneapolis. It’s open seven days a week (except Easter Sunday). A few weeks ago, the bakery lowered the price on all of its bread products to 99 cents, including loaves, buns, hoagies, ciabatta loaves, focaccia and others. The bakery decided to lower its regular $2.50 to $3.50 prices to 99 cents for an “extended but limited time” as its customers struggle with the recession, said manager Kristi Wilson. Each day three to six bread varieties are offered including Parisian baguettes, multi-grain, honey oat, cinnamon, and cranberry wild rice. Friday’s offerings include wheat, white, sourdough, ciabatta loaves, and pull-apart rolls. The bakery has been a gem in the Phillips neighborhood since 2003. Go for the bread but check out the noteworthy desserts too.

LOFTHOUSE/ C2B CONCEPTS

daily.

or cinnamon-raisin).
