Where can I get a good deal on a mattress?

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

One of the most common questions I get as a consumer columnist is “Where can I get a good deal on a mattress?” When the person asking is looking for rock bottom prices, I send them to Dave’s Furniture World in Bloomington. It’s a bare bones showroom, nothing fancy, and prices reflect that. There are plenty of name brand mattresses at Dave’s.  Dave’s prices are 30 to 70 percent lower than other stores’ sale prices. Why? Most of the beds are blemished, discontinued, one-of-kinds or demos.

But Dave doesn’t sell Simmons, which is a favorite for many sleepers looking for plush firmness and… ooooh… those individually pocketed coils. Here’s a tip: You can buy one of the famous ”W” beds made by Simmons on sale at the Hotel W Store online. They’re so popular that W started selling the mattress after numerous inquiries from hotel guests. (If guests could stuff a mattress in their suitcase, they would.)  If you’re curious about the famous W mattress, you can check one out at the new W Minneapolis Hotel in the Foshay. The cheapest rate I got from the front desk for this weekend was $209. The cheapest online rate was $189. You may be able to get an even cheaper rate just by showing up at the front desk and asking for the room on the spot.

Sale details: Click on the Hotel W Store site above and enter the coupon code T6F4M to get a 40 percent discount. (queen is $627 after the discount, king is $1,045, twin, full, Cal-King sizes also). Delivery is free and there is no tax. The sale is offered through Aug. 29. Mattress sales are final.
