Weekend sales

Best bets for weekend deals

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Support the local airline, Sun Country, and fly cheaply too. If you book a trip between now and Tuesday for travel by October 14 (except Anchorage–travel by Sept. 10), fares are $59 each way (Branson), $84 (Dallas), $99 (LA, NYC, SF), $109 (Boston, Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, Seattle, DC), $129 (San Diego) and $199 (Anchorage). One tip for fliers who like to upgrade to first class, go early to the airport. Pay only an extra $99 (one-way) if you upgrade at the service counter. That’s a slightly better deal than the $249 fares (one way) that Sun Country specials on first class flights booked to Vegas, LA, NYC, SF and Seattle during the sale. The downside is that the first class seats may be sold out by the time you get to the service counter.

Grethen House  women’s boutique in Minneapolis starts its 70 percent off all spring/summer merchandise sale today. The sale on high-end designer merch continues through Saturday. Those in the know who wait for the 90 percent off sale, that happens Aug. 21-22 at the outlet, GH2.

Nordstrom’s anniversary sale is in progress through Aug. 2. It’s a cool way to save 30 percent on new fall fashions before the season starts–although today’s weather feels like fall. I asked one Nordstrom employee to scout some deals for us: Selected True Religion jeans for men and women, Hobo International handbags (Nordstrom exclusive), both brand new for fall and on sale to boot. If you prefer to shop online, you can get free shipping on orders over $200. Also, you can request to have your order picked up in the Mall of America store.

Half-Price Books’ tent sale at its Highland Park St. Paul location continues through Sunday. Books, CDs and DVDs are $3 or less. The Highland fest is also happening this weekend, so be prepared for parking issues.

Needlework Unlimited (4420 Drew Av. S., Minneapolis, 612-925-2454) timed its sweater sale perfectly. On a cool weekend, most of the handknit adult sweater samples are $20 to $40, except for the Dale of Norway sweaters at $90 (reg. $200 to $250). Knitting yarn is 50 percent off during the sale Fri-Sunday. Additional markdowns Sunday.

What’s on sale this holiday weekend?

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

The discounts during Memorial Day weekend aren’t usually as good as July 4 or Labor Day, but the selection is better. You’ll still find a swimsuit in your size and patio furniture sets with four or six chairs instead of three or five. Here’s a start of some of the better sales. I’ll keep adding as I discover more.

Ikea’s Seize the Days sales are excellent bargains. Remember when Ikea hardly ever had a sale? Now they’re monthly. Different bargains occur Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Go early because they usually sell out by afternoon. Nab your selection when the store opens and then go for the free breakfast offered each day while supplies last. Saturday’s deal is the iconic Poang chair for $39 (reg. $90), Sunday’s deal is a 2-pack of Ritva curtains and tiebacks in five color options for $10 (reg. $30). Monday’s deal is he Beddinge Lovas sofa-bed for $149 (reg. $249). The Expedit bookcase is on sale all three days for $49 (reg. $90).

Arc’s Value Village, Unique Thrift and Savers all discount everything 50 percent Monday.

If you’re traveling and heading by an outlet mall, it’s usually pretty good one-stop shopping during a holiday weekend. You might want to stop at the mall office for coupons or join the mall’s VIP club online for exclusive coupons. Me, I usually check the clearance at the back of the outlets before checking out the regular outlet merchandise.

Stay safe. Let me know of other good deals this holiday weekend that you discover.

A Sunday spa treatment for $17 (and free daycare while you luxuriate)

Friday, May 15th, 2009

If you buy the idea that we all need to treat ourselves to “little luxuries” in this economy, Lifetime Fitness LifeSpas come to the rescue. Thirteen of the LifeSpas in Lifetime Fitness locations in the Twin Cities are offering treatments for $17 each from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, normally priced $20 to $75. Reservations can be made now for the Sunday services including mini facials (reg. $50 to $75), mini pedicures (reg. $45 to $75), shampoo and style (reg. $20 to $65), back and shoulder massage (reg. $35 to $60), and men’s haircut (reg. $20 to $65). Original prices vary based on the experience on the service provider.

You do not need to be a Lifetime Fitness member to use the LifeSpas, but anyone purchasing a spa service receives a day pass for the club that day. Parents can also take advantage of the free child care center while at the spa/club.

LifeSpas at the following locations are participating in the sale: Champlin, Chanhassen (limited availability), Crosstown (Eden Prairie), Fridley, Lakeville, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Savage, St. Louis Park and White Bear Lake (no hair care).

Weekend bargains (expired)

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Where can you find a good deal this weekend? Let me list a few. Feel free to add your own.

1. Discount 70 (4027 Central Av. NE, Columbia Heights, 763-781-8922) started a big shoe sale Friday. More than 1,600 pairs of new shoes are discounted 70 to 80 percent, including tennis shoes, hiking boots, sports shoes (golf, football, baseball), and sandals. Discount 70 is, in my opinion, one of the best discount stores in the Twin Cities. It’s also a good spot to find low prices on electronics, furniture, flat screen TVs, toys and house and yard goods.

2. Bibelot  gift shops are offering a 20 percent storewide discount today and Saturday. Spend $100 and get a $10 giftcard.

3. Albertville Premium Outlets has a better than average deal going on Saturday and Sunday. Sign up and print the VIP coupon sheet for extra savings Saturday and Sunday. Usually, the discounts are 15 or 20 percent if you spend $100, but this weekend only save 20 to 25 percent off your entire purchase (no minimum) at Converse, Dressbarn, Guess, Guess Kids, Harry & David, Maidenform, Reebok, Rockport and Yankee Candle. Stores offering 20 to 25 percent off a single item include Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein, Coldwater Creek, Lancome, Le Creuset, Samsonite and Wilson’s Leather. Print out a voucher at the site for a free coupon booklet available in the mall office. Some of those coupons are different from the ones on the website.

4. Northern Tool celebrates the grand opening of its Minnetonka store at County Rd. 101 and Hwy. 7 Saturday. There will be discounts of 10 percent on most tools with some up to 75 percent. Free breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served as well as appearances by Minnesota Twin Al Newman (9-10 a.m.), Vikings John Randle, Chuck Foreman and NASCAR star Erik Darnell (10 a.m. to 11 p.m.).
