Around the horn and sailing for port

Capt. Wesley Heerssen of the U.S. Brig Niagara called Tuesday at noon from the deck of the ship as it rounded the Keweenaw Peninsula. “We’ve got a fair breeze, clear skies and we’ve been having a nice sail,” he said. “We’re about 150 miles from port and we’ll be on schedule.”

Gene Shaw of Visit Duluth says that the schedule is now firm. The tall ships will rendez vous off shore  at 4 p.m. on Thursday and come into Duluth Harbor under sail between 4 and 5. The best places to view the ships (other than on a boat in the harbor, if you’re lucky enough to have one) will be anywhere along  Park Point. The ships will come under the Lift Bridge but they won’t be under sail at that point.

The Niagara must be the ship that came by Grand Marais last night (wed) around 7 pm. It went past the harbor entrance then headed back out into the lake and put up its sails.
Pretty much everyone in town stopped and whipped out their cameras.
It was impressive, especially because North House’s schooner Hjordis was out on a sail at the same time. Usually the Hjordis is one of the bigger boats in the harbor, but next to the Niagara it looked like a toy!

Oh no, my coworker, Tim, just got the wind taken out of his sails after reading this.
He’s heading up to Duluth for the weekend this afternoon and will miss the ships coming in under sail.
I’m sure there will be another opportunity to see the ships in full sail when they leave.
Do you know the scheduled departure time?
