Travel Q & A: long Miami layover

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Q:We will have a six-hour layover in the Miami International airport. Do they have lockers in the terminals where we can leave carry-ons while we walk-about and eat a meal? My husband is worried about leaving the airport for a while before our connecting flight, so we will eat, walk a bit, maybe sleep and read. Anything else to do? Is there a good place to catch a nap without huge amounts of traveler traffic?
A:There aren’t any storage lockers in the Miami airport. Instead, you can check your carry-ons at the Baggage Storage Room on the second floor on Concourse E (across from American Airlines). They charge $4 per day for small carry-ons (i.e. backpacks and computers) and $7 per day for larger carry-ons. To use this service, you need to present your ticket and identification.
Airport officials said that there aren’t any places that are great for sleeping, and pointed us toward the Miami International Airport Hotel, which has half-day rates starting at $105, plus tax for a double occupancy room. But sleepinginairports.net says that the best place to take a nap is just before Concourse A on the upper level. One poster commented that the airport is cold (we agree), so you might want to bring a jacket or wrap to keep from getting chilled. As for other things to do, Miami is an international art hot spot, and the airport has several galleries as well as site specific installations that are worth checking out.
Finally, please consider leaving the airport! Miami is a terrific city and there are plenty of options within a short cab ride, including a meal at the Cuban classic Cafe Versailles in Little Havana. For more ideas, check out our story and audio slide show on Miami.
