U hockey: WCHA honors two state players

Colorado College junior Chad Rau, a 5-11, 184-pound center from Eden Prairie, was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.
He had his first college hat trick, and his fourth-winner this season, as CC beat Denver 5-1 last Friday. He also had an assist the next nightin the Tigers’ 3-2 loss at Denver.
Through 12 games, Rau is third in scoring among WCHA players with nine goals and six assists.
St. Cloud State defenseman John Swanson was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. IntheHuskies’ splitwith Clarkson last weekend, he had two assists and his first goal of the season. It came short-handed.
Swanson, a 5-11, 180-pound junior from St. Cloud, helped theHuskies kill nine of 10 Clarkson power-play chances.
The Rookie of the Week was CCfreshman goalie Richard Bachman, who stopped 52 of 56 shots in theTigers’ split with Denver. The Pioneers were 0-for-6 on power plays in the series.
Bachman leads all WCHA goalies with an .800 winning percentage — he is 8-2, and also has a league-leading .944 save percentage. His 1.70 goals-against average is the fifth best.
Gophers freshman goalie Alex Kangas, who played in a 3-3 overtime tie with Michigan State on Friday, was among the other nominees for Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week.
