U hockey: St. Cloud State scouting report
Posted on January 10th, 2008 – 9:56 PMBy Roman Augustoviz
This is the only series the Gophers play with St. Cloud State this season. Too bad. The Huskies have an interesting team.
Last weekend, St. Cloud State split a series with North Dakota at the National Hockey Center. The Huskies won the first game 3-2 in a strange fashion. St. Cloud State had zero shots on goal in the second period and started the third period trailing 2-0.
The Huskies must have been saving their strength for the comeback. Freshman forward Nick Oslund scored the game-winner. Junior Brent Borgen, a transfer from the Gophers, had two assists. The next night, North Dakota won 6-2.
Sophomore forward Ryan Lasch had two goals in the series. He had 17 goals and 15 assists for 32 points, which leads the WCHA and the nation in scoring. Lasch had only 16 goals total last season.
Freshman forward Garrett Roe, second in WCHA scoring behind Lasch, has 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points, the most in the nation by a freshman.
Third on the Huskies in scoring — and fourth in the WCHA — is sophomore Andreas Nodl with 10 goals and 14 assists.
St. Cloud State coach Bob Motzko, a Gophers assistant under Don Lucia from 2001-05, has a 4-1-2 record against Minnesota as the Huskies head coach since 2005-06.
Lastseason the Huskies tied the Gophers 5-5 and beat them 5-3 atMariucci, and tied them 3-3 and beat them 5-1 at the National Hockey Center.Lasch had three goals and five assists in those four games.
This season Lasch is scoring even more, so the Gophers better slow him down at least.
