Pittman likes challenge
Posted on March 31st, 2008 – 3:37 PMBy Chip Scoggins
The Gophers return to spring practice tomorrow for their first workout in full pads. I’ll check in afterward with an update.
I had a chance to sit down and talk with junior college transfer David Pittman for the first time and I came away impressed. He seemed like a bright guy who is confident but not cocky.
I asked Pittman about playing different positions and he said he loves the challenge. He said the Gophers spread offense is similar to the one he ran at Pasadena City College so the only real adjustment is learning new terminology.
It will be interesting to see how Tim Brewster and OC Mike Dunbar incorporate Pittman into this offense.
I’ll have a profile of Pittman in Tuesday’s paper.

Good stuff Chip! A very well written article.
My guess is we’re going to see a lot of offensive “shifts”. Dunbar is a master at that. Check out what he did at Northwestern. While he was there, the entire offensive personnel were very athletic and had a lot of different looks. I don’t know if we’re deep enough yet though to pull it off the way Northwestern did.
I doubt that we’ll see a pure dual quartback offense though. Everytime Pittman is mentioned, the word receiver comes up.
Speaking of mention….is this the first time this spring that Brewster has not mentioned Tramaine Brock?? Chip, Brock would make a great feature. I think we’re all a little curious as to what Brewster is seeing in this young man that makes him speak so highly.
Chip says,
“Weber appears a lock to remain the starter, but the Gophers could add a special Pittman package to the offense for certain situations. Pittman considers himself a pocket passer and rather would throw than run. But he led his junior college in rushing the past two seasons, and his mobility could provide a change of pace.”
___________
Why in the world would Weber be considered “a lock” for quarterback after two spring practices?
Nobody should be considered a lock for any position, especially when there are still 27 new guys waiting to join the team this summer.
Weber did nothing last year that would warrant any more than having a leading shot at starting at QB. If the coaches are considering a guy who consistently failed to deliver an accurate ball a lock on the job, that is quite disappointing.
Great article on Pittman, Chip. Can’t wait to see him play. According to Looney Toons’ thinking, though, there’s not much hope: he’s black, he’s fast, and he’s a member of the foreign legion.
–Why in the world would Weber be considered “a lock” for quarterback after two spring practices?–
He shouldn’t be. There really are no “locks” when you finish 1-11.
dac - I usually am in agreement with you, but regarding Weber, I’m not.
For a freshman, Weber showed unusual poise in the pocket and put up some pretty impressive numbers. Our offense was not the problem last year. If you had taken the time to see the throwing lanes he had, you might speak differently. Yes he ran too much and yes he sometimes threw into a crowd, but those are freshman issues. I believe we’ll see a lot of maturity this year that only playing time can help.
Good point Rescooter, I am really intrigued at what everyone is talking about with Brock.
DAC, from all reports, Weber has come out firing and has played really well so far this Spring. From what I have read and heard, he has really taken a big step forward in his development. Now, I agree he shouldn’t be a “lock” and in the fall the competition should heat up, but I can see where the coaches are coming from.
It sounds like what I thought is coming true. I thought this year Pittman would be the guy to challange Weber and it seems he’s already number two on the depth chart.
I like Webber aand think this year he will have a stellar season. I do not think the coaches will tolerate some of the struggles he had last year, not when you have a guy as talented as Pittman on the bench.
Someone may point out Brewster doesn’t like musical quaterback, but when Mortenson and Majaweski were your only two options last year that’s easy to say.
I know others will say Gray will challenge but he’ll be redshirted this year, I can gaurantee it. He’s not going to beat out two quarterbacks who are very good and have a lot of college experience. Gray may be the quarterback of the future, but not in 2008.
these are the last days
well whos tom?
tried to warn you!
I’ll save ya!

Scooter …. I fail to see how you can reasonably agree or disagree with me after two spring practices. This is the time to try all the options, not just lock in on Weber.
Weber did show maturity and poise last year even though he was put in a very difficult situation. He threw the ball into the faces of onrushing linemen far too often and threw the ball into coverage way more than he should have. However, I can forgive a lot of those mistakes because we were often being overwhelmed.
What is not forgiveable is consistently missing wide open receivers running short routes. Weber is no lock to start until he proves he can throw accurately and can keep drives alive by completing short balls.
There are many reasons the QB job should be wide open. 1) We have just started spring ball; 2) 27 new players haven’t even joined the team; 3) we have QB depth this year where we did not last year; and, 4) Weber started every game last year and played almost every offensive down and won one game.
I do not believe he or anyone else has a lock on a job.
Bench weber. Go with all new guys.
dac - I agree with you on the “job-lock”. But I disagree on your overall assessment of Weber.
Most QBs have 2 and at best 3 good choices for where to throw the ball. Weber had usually 1, sometimes 2. You are right, he was overwhelmed. Personally, I feel that he made up for some poor play by some others on the offense side of the ball.
Brewster gushes over everything. To give him credit he has learned to say less over the off season, it is hard to hype 1-11.
Weber will remain the starting QB until someone better able actually shows up and has the O play better. “What??!! Rivals doesn’t pick the QB?” No, the guys that have their actual, official jobs on the line, pick who starts.
By all means hope to have that weber on the bench. This fall my Hawkeyes are going to roll over your goofers.
I think the “lock” statement is Chip’s own opinion. I don’t think he heard that from Brewster. Nonetheless, Weber should at least be the leading candidate for starting QB.
d_a(sp)_c, it’s great to see you back!
I really don’t want to get into the discussion about Weber with you again, thoough. In my opinion, he was one of very few bright spots for this team last year, and should at least be considered the guy to beat out.
Without Weber starting this 2008 season would go south in a hurry. I’m looking for Weber to lead HIS team to wins over iowa, NU and Indiana at the dome. Without his hard-earned experience at qb it will be totally back to the drawing board for a second straight year for the offense.
Who are the running backs? How will they be used?
It is up to Mr. Weber to put this team on his back IF this team is to have a chance to win ANY Big Ten games in 2008. I say with a healthy Weber, they have a chance to win 3 Big Ten games.
“I’m looking for Weber to lead HIS team to wins over iowa, NU and Indiana at the dome.”
I must be going crazy, I agree with eye on something. I better go re-check my position on this.
Eye, that is the most rational thing I think I have seen you post and I kind of agree with you.
Rescooter, is the sky falling because something is seriously wrong with the Universe if we are all starting to agree with Eye.
GOPHER1 - Perhaps I’m just giddy over the start of spring football. It’s been a LONG winter!!
Well, rescooter, if you weren’t so worried about trying to control what other people say, you might learn a thing or two every now and then.
Weber has more heart than any kid coming in at qb at the U of M that I have seen in a very long time. I love it when a qb has a LOT of heart! I have said that he reminds me of Drew Stanton from MSU and I ONLY hope that dunbar’s offense does not get him hurt the way MSU’s offense eventually get Stanton constantly banged up.
Weber and Decker are a fantastic pair that I would put on ANY Gopher team that I have ever seen. Decker is probably bigger and faster than one of my other all-time favorite receivers…Aaron Osterman. The kid just makes plays.
Weber and Decker are worth the price of admissiona alone! Some of my other favorite receivers were people like TuTu Atwell, Ryan Thelwell, Aaron Brown (from Murray’s mid-60’s teams), and, of course, Ron Johnson.
Weber and Decker will come to play EVERY Saturday. Keep ‘em healthy and keep them on the field. That is the HOPE for the 2008 season.
I have not seen these rational writings from Loon and Wren in a long time.
i try to warn you
d_a_c: good to see you back.
I like Decker but Ron Johnson was a beast at reciever.
for thine is the kingdom
Rescooter, I actually had a chance to talk with Brock the other day for an upcoming feature. He’s a quiet guy but coaches and players say he’s extremely gifted athletically. He told me he ran a 4.37 at his junior college.
Brewster is obviously very high on him. He has mentioned his speed and competitiveness a number of times already this spring.
As for Weber, I just don’t see anyone taking his starting job. He is getting most of the reps in practice and Brewster and the players have had nothing but rave reviews about him through the first few practices. We are not allowed to watch practice, but a high school coach who was there Saturday told me that Weber looks much more comfortable and in charge this spring.
Good points eye. Weber does play with a lot of heart and did take a beating. I’d hope the limit the number of running plays with him. I think the OJT that he had last year will pay dividends this upcoming season. If he can clean up some of the mental mistakes from last year, he should have a damn fine season.
–I like Decker but Ron Johnson was a beast at reciever.–
Ditto. I’m surprised Johnson didn’t have a better NFL career.
All I know is that August 30th seems so far away!!
While I fully agree if Weber has not progressed he should not be the starter this year.
However, I do not expect this to be the case from what I’ve heard and from what I saw last year. If he cleans up the rookie mistakes he should be a top Big Ten QB.
Also, regarding Decker. He is a great athlete but I think will be a target this year for defenses. They will try and take him out of his game. So I’m hoping Pittman can step up and take some pressure off him.
I’d rank Ron Johnson around the top, but Decker is really something special. A VERY gifted athlete. Actually, one of my favorites was Logan Payne. Not necessarily because he had great numbers, but because he was a great kid and played hard every Saturday.
Great 8:41 AM post, eye, except for your snide comment to Rescooter.
No one is trying to “control” what people say. If you view disagreeing with an opinion as trying to “control,” I guess that’s a problem you need to work out for yourself.
I do think the offensive will take a big step forward this year. For a number or reasons.
1. Webber - I have often said, this year Weber will have a stellar season. Having a year under his belt, I think he’ll be one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten. That being said, I think this year he also knows there are guys behind him that can play. Last year I never thought we should bench him. This year IF he struggles, we certianly have a lot more options. I still think this year Webberwill be tough to beat out.
2. Dunbar’s system - Reusse even said his playbook was as big as the Bible. You don’t master his system in one season. You can argue wether he should have scaled it down, but the offense will be a lot more comfortable playing in his system in 2008. I think the next couple of years the offense will put up big numbers.
3. More options - This year at every position on offense we’ll have more options. Recievers, quarterback,
offensive linemen and even running backs, we have more options to choose from and depth.
NO we are not going to be a top 10 offense in the nation, but I think we’ll be top 5 in the Big Ten.
Finally we are starting to have the type of discussion this board was created for instead of the constant bicckering that is usually on here.
As I said last week, I have been really impressed with how Weber has responded to the high rated qb’s that have been brought in. The “shame on me” quote he had was a classic and it really showed a lot of maturity. Go Gophs!
Thanks for the information Chip. I’m looking forward to that feature.
I’m going to take the liberty to read between the lines and make some comments on each observation:
1) “He’s a quiet guy but coaches and players say he’s extremely gifted athletically.”
-My Comments: So the “leader” is not the loudest or funniest guy, but the great athlete that gives 100%; 100% of the time. I like that! The most influential inspiring guy is the person that doesn’t talk it, but shows it. You can go a long way with a group like that.
2)”He told me he ran a 4.37 at his junior college.”
-My Comments: Brewster has followed through on the “need for speed” recruiting. None have talked about how much they can bench press or dead-lift, they’re all talking about speed. This is a huge shift from the previous coaching regime. If you can coach it, get people that think that way and can do it.
3) Perhaps he would have been more talkative if you would have emphasized that your last name isn’t Reusse! ![]()
I also forgot to mention, thanks for the update Chip. Keep up the good work.
jimbo: IF you think bringing young kids into some line such as studweel55 did this morning in antoher thread not low-classed and obnoxious, I guess I would just have to say that you are out to lunch.
Yes, jimbo: the gopher hole dirty tricks people are trying to go too far over the line here. If I have to start looking up Norman Dale and his good buddy studwell55, I guess that I will need to have a talk with them face to face, person to person and attorney to attorney.
I agree Gopher1,
I think we ALL know that Brewster needs to win more. Brewster has done some really good things, but the bottom line is wins and loses. All I’m saying is at least give him the 2008 season and see what he can do.
If the Gophers really struggle again and can’t win four games then Loon, Wren and their gang could be right. I do think this year the team will turn things around and be much improved. Time will tell but one season is way too early to predict the fuuture.
eye, I agree that the comments you mention are classless and uncalled for. You can be assured that you will not hear that type of garbage from me.
‘If I have to start looking up Norman Dale and his good buddy studwell55, I guess that I will need to have a talk with them face to face, person to person and attorney to attorney.’
YOU BRING IT, BITCH! THANKS FOR PUTTING YOUR THREAT AGAINST MY HUMBLE CLIENTS IN WRITING! SEE YOU AT YOUR SANITY HEARING, WINONA WHACK JOB.
goldohfour: If you think I don’t want the Gophers to win as many games as possible, you are sadly mistaken. With THIS schedule, it would be a crime not to have these kids on the team experiencing as MANY wins as they can get. The kids NEED to have wins…Big Ten Wins! To hell with the fans…the kids wearing the Maroon & Gold NEED to experience Big Ten wins!
I have no faith and no indication that brewster is capable of preparing his team to win. Based upon what I saw on Game Day Saturday in 2007, how could I have any confidence?
IF he is looking, trying to find ways to get Mr. Pittman on the field and is also looking at him in a number of positions to determine which positions he can be the most successful at right NOW, it would mean that perhaps the coaches have begun to learn that they need to put their players into position to WIN rather than to force a system on their players that their players are not capable of winning Big Ten games in.
Now, some people have chastized Mr. Weber for running too much last season. I contend that he did EXACTLY what dunbar wanted him to do…otherwise dunbar would have worked night and day to get him to quit running the ball so much. Coaches have THAT ability, you know. They have a great deal of leverage over their players and if they want something, they can demand that the player do what they want him to do…OR be benched. IF dunbar did not want Weber running so often last season he had a bench he could have put Weber on to get his attention. However, Weber was better at running the ball than any other qb or running back once the usual injuries mounted further into the season. dunbad did NOT do that. Therefore, one can only conclude that dunbar wanted Weber to run as often as he had him run. IF it is an option…the coach simply needs to take that option away if a young qb is having any difficulty making the choices.
In many ways, I believe that the coaches let their kids down in 2007 and did not do a good job coaching. Certainly, some of those close defeats SHOULD have been close wins in 2007.
IF the coaches can learn to make the system fit their players, they will have much better success on Game Day Saturday and they will also perhaps even give a fan a reason to have a “little bit” of hope for the future.
Again I agree, eye, that Weber did exactly as he was instructed to last year. Weber will certainly be a top quarterback when he cuts down on the poor decisions and interceptions. Admittedly he coughed the ball up way to often last year, but it would have been nice if the defense could have had a stop or two afterwards.
I think the offense will be productive this year. The defense still makes me queasy.
i says eye deserves everything he gets tossed at him. he has attacked people for years and now he whines and cries because it is coming back to him? that is the the definition of a crybaby plain and simple.
There’s no excuse for bringing family members into the fray.
there is no excuse for most of the stuff that asshole has said.
Ruppert, you should go back and have another sip of kool-aid.
Must be a slow day at the hole: the real ya-hoos are showing up here.
You’re not going to sic your son on me again, are you ruppert?
Whats that mean, Skippy? It can be arranged if you don’t watch your mouth.
I think it would be Jimbo: if you don’t watch your fingers, right?
Last fall, before the NDSU game, you threatened to have your 6′ 5″ 250 lb. son kick my ass at the game. I don’t even remember what raised your ire. We all had a lot if fun with it, but you disappeared back down the hole.
Well if you need/want your ass kicked he is the man for the job, BoZo.
The name’s Jimbo.
Geez Jimbo, now you’ve got somebody else’s kid after you. I think the last time this happened it was a 250lb gal from North Dakota - she also sported a bit of a mustache if I remember right.
You survived that, I’m sure you’ll have no problem with this.
Scooter, if you remember correctly, ruppert threatened to have his enormous son kick my ass at the NDSU game. As we discussed it on this site, we figured out that there’d be a lot of 6-5, 250 lb North Dakota women at the game who would also like to kick my ass.
Needless to say, while at that game, i quaked every time I encountered a large person; and there were plenty of them at that game!
I’ve never lowered myself to threatening someone by sicking my kid on them. It says a lot about a person that would threaten to do such a thing.
Fathers need to be role models. Acting like a complete idiot on the internet and then hiding behind your kids is lower than low. Jimbo, you’re far better than this clown. Leave him to the Recruitings and Loons of the world.
And just for the record, I neither want nor need my ass kicked.
ruppert, I’m almost 60 years old. You could probably kick my ass without your son’s help.
The only threat I could make with my kids, Scooter, is to sue someone, or audit them.
You’ll know rupport’s car when you see the bumber-sticker:
“My kid was inmate of the month at Stillwater Prison”
Jimbo, if you threatened me with that, it would definitely get my attention!

Back to football, Scooter.
Will you be at the spring game? I’m planning on it, but am scheduled to artrive home that afternoon from a business trip. I’ll make it if my plane’s on time.
How do you think the defense will fare this year?
Knowing a little about defense, I’d say that our speed will compensate for most of the “rookie” mistakes - like not reading the oppositions schemes and over committing. That was part of the problem last year (ie. speed), but we also had some that were “gun-shy”.
Gun-shy tacklers end up arm tackling, not following through with tackles and sometimes looking away from the runner (anticipating a collision). I saw this happen many times last year and they ended up going for long plays.
Gun-shyness can be overcome, but it takes a lot of practice. I’m hoping this group is not only fast but really tough. The ones that like the contact and keep coming back for more. We had a few, but not generally last year.
You’re a bit more optimistic than me.
So are you going to the spring game?
Unless this 6-5, 250 lb North Dakota kid’s off his rocker like his dad, I’d have to imagine he’d really question his father’s sanity. I could just imagine the conversation. “Son, I need you to come down to the cities and kick this guys ass, who’s making fun of me on a blog.” Too funny…
What is everyone the most curious to see during the Spring practices?
I’m most curious about:
1. The defensive line
2. The defensive backfield
3. The running game
Wren,
Sometimes I wonder if any of the Masonites want the Gophers to win anymore. It’s easy for the Masonties to talk tough right now but in the future that may not be the case.
I don’t know if Brewster is going to turn things around, but right now I’m going to give him a chance. If he struggles again this year, I’m more willing to side with your opinion but it’s too early to tell.
I know you give Brewster one in a billion chance to succeed but sometimes a person you least expect is able to do great things.
1. No one expected a shepherd boy named David to become the greatest king Isreal ever had, and he even defeated a giant Goliath along the way.
2. Some people could not believe how this nerdy looking guy named Bill Gates could revolutionize the computer industry and yet he did.
3. Who thought Doug Flutie a midget would amount to anything at quarterback, yet he won the Hiesman and led his team to the 4th ranked team in the nation.
4. Oakland fans thought Al Davis was crazy in hiring a linebackers coach to coach his Oakland Raiders. John Madden led them to a Super Bowl victory and had a Hall of Fame career.
Sometimes the people you least expect turn out to do great things. That’s why I not turning my back on Brewster yet. You can’t be successful unless you have failed at times. You never know this unknown assistant coach might be the one in almost 50 years to led us to the promiseland. I not going to say Brewster will defintely accomplish that, but I’m definetly not giving up on him yet!
Scooter … I doubt my overall assessment of Weber is much different than yours. After all, neither of us has anything to compare him with. He started every game and played all but about six offensive downs last year so we have nobody else’s performance to rate him against.
I agree entirely with Jumbo’s statement that the returning starter has the inside pole position to keep the job and must be decisively beat out. But having said that, you don’t saddle the other horses in the race with Fat Mikey.
The reason for spring ball and summer practice is to give everybody a fair shot at winning their jobs. In my opinion, Eric Decker is the only guy on offense who has nothing he needs to prove to be named the starter and go-to guy.
It is pointless to go out and fight to recruit an All-American juco QB and then tell him on Day 2 of spring practice somebody else is a “lock” for the job.
If towards the end of August the coaches announce that Webber beat back all comers and is the best candidate to run the offense, I will accept that with great optimism and relish. I just don’t want to hear it on April 1.
After watching nine innings of baseball last night I sure am glad Gardy didn’t proclaim that Denard Spann was a lock for centerfield six weeks ago.
Jimbo, we will know nothing about the run game from the spring. We have one running back for spring that is of Div. I calibier and an offensive line that will not be set in stone until next fall. Decker is not playing spring football due to baseball so Weber will be throwing to the same stiffs that he had last year. Weber and Decker are the best palyers on the offense until someone from the new group arrives and proves themselves. It sounds like we have a DC who at least understands that you can not run a pro-style defense without the horses. The defense will not be tested this spring but if coach Roof gets his system installed I look for the defense to be improved. I do find it intersting that there has been NO talk of Brewsters 4* son Clint in the QB race. And Derek your earlier comment about the previous staff not recruiting speed and talent can not go unchallenged. L Maroney was pretty fast and the NFL is full of players that have played for the Gophers over the past years. Move-on and stop trying to slam the last staff. You are dead wrong.
goldohfour: Just how would you define brewster being a success at Minnesota? Would it be getting to the point during the first three years when he could win 5 Big Ten games in a single season plus all his ooc games? That would give him a 9-3 record in either year 1, 2 or 3? Would that be success in your eyes? Or, in year 2, if he could go 5-7? That would supposedly be an improvement over year one, but would it predict success?
You say he might not make it…but he might? What does that mean goldohfour? Just what would constitute success for him? Be specific. No wishey washey statements of “a little of this kind of sort of and a little of that maybe…”
Does he have to do as well (or as poorly) as Mason did in his first 3 seasons? If he doesn’t do better, then obviously he would have done worse…right goldohfour?
He has the new stadium coming. Mason had to struggle and work hard just to get that stadium built…and even then he needed a last second contract extension from prexy b and mac-turi to be able to go out and bring home the stadium for his two shakey bosses. Then their fired his butt and spent millions buying him out. But, hd DID get that new stadium for the dude or dudette who would succeed him.
So, how much better than Mason will brewster need to be at the end of year 1,? (Oh that’s reight: he was 1-11 and 0-8 in year 1. How much better than Mason will brewster need to be in year two? Numbers are needed here goldohfour. How much better in year 3 will brewster need to be in terms of numbers of Big Ten wins and total wins and crappy bowl game invitations?
The thing is goldohfour: brewster dug himself a real hole in year number one. That is why I say it will be mighty tough for him to succeed. He showed me nothing last year. Maybe he will show me something this year…I HOPE!

It has taken years of half-witted, slow-witted, and dim-witted Gopherhole postings to create my persona. You can take my wife; take my honor; take my wealth; but you who traduces my Gopherhole name–a pox upon your house.
Wren,
YOUR the who said you’d give Brewster one in a billion chance so you define it. If you can’t remember look on your early posts.
It’s like that last time Wren thought I was lying about no excuses. I then brought up a post where you said it and you had no response and the Masonites told me to take it easy on the old man.
Mr. Rendahl, my clients have asked that you cease and desist your unlawful use of their names. If you choose otherwise, we will take extreme measures for this is quite serious.
GENERAL COMMENT:
God to see the official Studwell55 distant himself from the comments of yesterday. Those comments were stupid to the point of self destructive.
Why any human being would want to threaten a man’s child is past all understanding. BUT, what if ANYTHING should happen to any family member so threatened? Where will the consequences fall? Why would anyone be so stupid as to accept that very real possibility?
I write as an old timer. Only a human pig would threaten a person’s child. Too far is too far.
Well Looney,

You morons are the Mississippi of the North! LMAO
The spread is not a ball control O, it is an explosive, clock stopping, error intolerant O that must work very well to not kill any D that is not excellent.
Weber is excellent but will be highly dependent on the rest of the O knowing what they are doing. The Foreign Legion is still off in the desert somewhere fighting off snipers. They will not help this O, in net, if they ever arrive and play (football).
The D is said to be highly dependent on the Legion this year.
Sorry, Weber will do his best, the kicking game is in good hands (feet) but overall, I’ve been around college football too long to believe in freshmen recruits saving a team. If it weren’t for the super easy schedule we would not be looking forward to even the Motor City Bowl. Throw away season part II.
And this is more studwell’s speed:

Here’s a list of all the exciting things one can do in Iowa:
(the sound of crickets)
Comments like “…the NFL is full of players that have played for the Gophers over the past years” can not go unchallenged either. Currently the U has 13 players listed on NFL rosters (at least one was Wacker’s — Tyrone Carter). Iowa has 33. Wisconsin has 34. And, for the real eye opener — Northern Iowa has 9.
Iowa Pigeon: I disagree. I hear the Female Facial Hair Pageants in Des Moines and Iowa City can be quite competitive.
