U hockey: Guentzel to sit back a while
Posted on April 19th, 2008 – 12:57 PMBy Roman Augustoviz
For the first time in many years, Mike Guentzel does not have to think about hockey today.
He resigned on Friday and on a Saturday morning talk show he said he will take a week to 10 days off before starting his new job search.
There are at least three head coaching jobs open in the USHL, where Guentzel once coached. The interim coach at Des Moines said he is not coming back, the Sioux City coach has retired and Green Bay is also looking for a coach.
The St. John’s University job is open, too. Much farther away, Division I Alaska Fairbanks also is hunting for a coach.
Guentzel said on the air Saturday and to me on Friday that he thinks he has built up credibility. In other words, when he knocks, doors will open.
Where do you think he will wind up? And how much of a loss is he to the Gophers’Â program?
