U wrestling: Waiting to replace Morgan

Gophers wrestling coach J Robinson said he is going to wait a while before filling the sudden opening on his staff.
Marty Morgan, the associate head coach who was with the program for 20 years, resigned this week.
“We’re going to take a little bit of time,” Robinson said. “I am not in any rush to do anything right now. I got an idea of what we want to do. But right now I am just going to sit back and look at the program and what our needs are and we will kind of go from there.
“We could add somebody or we could just move everybody around this year. Basically what I am doing is, I want to wait and assess where we are, what are needs before we do anything.”
Robinson said there are available coaches he could hire, but he still has seven other assistants, two paid, the rest volunteers.
“We still have a staff of eight people,” Robinson said. “Will [Marty] be missed? You bet he will be missed. But we have seven of the other guys back.”
Robinson in the past has sometimes been critical of coaches of women’s athletics teans being paid more than coaches of men’s teams in sports like baseball and, of course, wrestling.
He said he is working without a contract. His team won an NCAA team title in 2007 before a disappointing NCAA showing last season.
So someone had to ask him about Pam Borton’s $2.67-million contract for six years. He had not heard about it yet but was diplomatic.
“Good for Pam. I’m happy for her,” Robinson said. “I don’t write the checks.”
