The women’s cross-country team at the U has 52 runners, making it one of the largest teams in the country. Among them are seven transfers — “they made a mistake,” coach Gary Wilson says — can’t convince all the state’s top runners to stay home.

The Gophers are ninth in the first coaches’ NCAA rankings and a quick look at the rosters of the eight teams ahead of them reveals they have three Minnesotans.

Junior Bria Wetsch of Holy Family runs for No. 1 Oregon,  sophomore Alexandra Gits of Edina for No. 4 Stanford, and senior Megan Brandeland for No. 7 Princeton.
