U men’s hockey: FSN spotlighting a Gopher on Saturdays

The FSN production team is starting a new feature this weekend, called Saturday Spotlight. Its purpose is to introduce Gophers hockey fans to a different player each week. One player will  fill out a probing questionnaire, asking hm about his top five songs, hockey superstitions, junk food weakness, pre-game meal, etc. And during the game, viewers will hear from the player, his teammates and and coach Don Lucia. This Saturday FSN also will experiment with two boxing live game action. One box will follow the puck as usual, the  other will follow the Saturday Spotlight player with a second camera.

Sounds interesting. Wonder who the first spotlight players will be. My choices: captain Ryan Stoa (great start), goalie Alex Kangas (amazingly steady) or freshman defenseman Aaron Ness (high expectations). … Others FSN has to corner are junior defenseman David Fischer (articulate), freshman center Jordan Schroeder (magically with puck) and … Give me some ideas, I will pass them along to FSN (not that I have any pull with TV).

 BOFFO RATINGS

The TV ratings for Gophers hockey continue to be stong.  Last weekend, the average rating for the Friday game was 2.62, for the Saturday game 2.54. Each rating point means 16,000-plus households are tuned in.

A LOCAL CONNECTION

There are two players on the New Hampshire team from Wisconsin. The best known name is freshman defenseman Blake Kessel of Verona, Wis. He is the younger brother of former one-year Gophers player Phil Kessel.

Also on the roster is sophomore forward Mike Sislo whose hometown is Superior, Wis.

Then there is freshman goalie Tyler Scott. One of the people who reads my Gophers stories, Margaret, told me about him. He was born in Hutchinson on April 22, 1989, his bio confirms. His parents were Daniel and Nancy Scott.

His mother is a native of Dassel. His grandparents still live there and he has relatives in that area. His mother attended Gustavus. Scott was raised in Ridgefield, Conn., and went to a prep school, South Kent Prep where as a senior he had a 24-9-5 record.

Scott, who wears No. 1 and is 6-3, 191, has not played goalie for the Wildcats yet. Junior Brian Foster has played every game but one and in that game, the other freshman goalie played.

What a thrill it would be if Scott makes his college debut this weekend? Bet there might be some Minnesotans cheering for him, eh?

Roman,

Why no Gopher Hockey story in the paper today? Only a preview… I’m disappointed.

FSN had a spotlight in Sam Lofquist when they played Wisconsin.

They have also has a spotlight on Aaron Ness, which I believe was their first one.

Last weekend the spotlight was on Schroeder.

This is old news Roman.

The two box is new, though. Thanks for the heads up.

Seriously…it was the most annoying thing EVER! I couldn’t stand watching the “spotlight” bit they kept doing whenever Cade hit the ice, hockey’s tough enough to watch w/out a big screen and HD, and then they shrink it even furhter (making my 36 TV look like a 19″ TV) and yeah, can you say annoying!!!!
