The Hockey Commissioners Association has announced the sites of the season-opening Ice Breaker Invitational for 2010 through 2012.
The four-team tournament, which has involved 28 different teams in its first 12 years, will be held at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis — side of the 2007 Frozen Four — in 2010 and ‘11 and at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., in 2012.
It has been hosted by the Gophers twice. In 1998, the Ice Breaker was held at Mariucci Arena and in 2007 at the X. Minnesota played in both those Ice Breakers.
In 1998, the Gophers took third place in the Ice Breaker. They lost 6-4 to St. Lawence, then beat Ohio State 4-3. In 2007, the Gophers beat RPI 4-3 and Michigan 4-3 to win the title. That Michigan game was memorable in a bad way for the U; Ryan Stoa suffered a season-ending knee injury.
This year the Ice Breaker will be at the Qwest Center in Omaha and the host team will be the University of Nebraska Omaha. The other teams participating will be Army, Massachusetts-Lowell and St. Lawrence.
WHERE ARE HIS RINGS?
Senior goalie Shane Connelly of Wisconsin had two rings stolen on Saturday night. Somebody broke into his apartment and took his 2006 NCAA championship ring and his 2009 senior ring.
