Here’s mine, Gophers by six points. I’ll be in media row — is there one at wrestling matches — trying to avoid any flying bodies.

U wrestling: A chance to flex muscles in Omaha

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Defending NCAA wrestling champion and preseason No. 1 Minnesota will get a chance to prove how strong its lineup ison Saturday.

The Gophers are competing in the Kaufman-Brand Open, the largest single-day collegiate wrestling meet in the nation.

It is held at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. It starts at 9 a.m. at the Lee and Helene SappFieldhouse. And the spotlight is on individuals. It is not team versus team.

Entered are about 650 wrestlers from 42 teams in all three NCAA divisions. The U.S. OlympicTraining Center also will send a team.

A list of Division I teams includes Iowa, Iowa State,Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech and Wyoming.

Last year four Gophers took first place in the Elite Division: Jayson Ness at 125, Manuel Rivera at 149, C.P. Schlatter at 157 and Gabriel Dretsch at 174; Tyler Safratowich was fifth at 157.

In the Amateur Division, Scott Glasser was firstat 165, Mike Thorn third at 133, Joe Nord third at heavyweight, and Brent Eidenschink fourth at 197.

Periodic updates will be available on the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s website.

How many titles will this year’s team win? On paper it lookseven stronger than last year’s team which went 20-1.

My uneducated guess — not sure who is entered, and if they are at their best weights– issix between the twodivisons. Your thoughts?

This tournament will go a long way to deciding who will emerge as the team’s top heavyweight, Nord or Eidenschink, assuming both are entered and healthy.

On Nov. 24, the U starts its dual meet season at the Northern Quad at the UCR Regional Sports Center in Rochester. Other teams entered are Northern Colorado, Northern Illinois and North Dakota State.
