YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
Thanks for all the great seed starting advice!
Last week, my seedlings started to look a little leggy. I moved the trays closer to the light and set up a fan to blow throught the screen door of the CPPC (Cat-Proof Protection Chamber).
This morning, their stems were solid and strong. Though some of my peppers are still struggling to free themselves from their cotyledons, my tomatoes just sprouted their third set of leaves!

The Cherokee purples are looking great!
If you are like me you will need to start planning where all those new babies are going to fit ( or get out that list of people who need a little variety in their garden and truly appreciate all the angst that you have gone through to give them your plant children).
Give the peppers time, once they get going they will not be as tall as the ‘maters but will present themselves nicely with strong stems and glossy leaves.
When mine are growing the light is right on top of them.
They like the heat of the lights.
Start thinging about an easy way to harden them. (small whips and chains)
Put them out during the day on a south expousure and bring them in at night.
ok and if I could spell?
If you transplant the tomatoes to larger pots before they go outside, you can plant them so that the bottom leaves are level with the soil. They will grow roots wherever the stems touch the ground. Don’t think of leggy seedlings as a problem, just use it to your advantage.
I’d skip the tiny little whips and chains, though.
But Laurie….
*smile*
I used to know this guy who would beat his trees in the spring with a rolled up newspaper.
He claimed that by brusing the epidermis (the layer that draws sap up) he would speed up the growth of the tree by several weeks.
I mean really! We would see him in the front yard beating on his tress!
Wish I had a picture.

Wow! I can’t believe how great your seedlings look! What kind of lights are you using? Did you fertilize at all? Mine are so much smaller, even the ones I planted before yours (I thought). Maybe you posted the pix of their beginnings a bit after they had started though.
In any case - you go girl!
Pat, beating on the trees huh? That is odd. I wonder if he read “The Secret Life of Plants” which is a fascinating book (I’m reading it now). In it there are some studies that seem to suggest that “rough handling” of plants leads them to grow faster, and gentle handling makes them slow growth.
Tiny whips and chains indeed. Hmmmmmm.
