YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
With five days of hot and dry weather on the way, I decided to give up on my greens. On the verge of bitterness, I couldn’t baby the lettuces in the air conditioned house for another weekend. The planter is home to an ant colony and the cats are obsessed with digging in dirt. Not a good combination.
So, before heading to the office this morning, I picked through the wilting leaves. Then I garnished the last of my greens with herbs and borage flowers and made a salad of stars.
I even pulled a few “baby” carrots for color (the first of the season — yay!).
As expected, every bite of my lunch was bitter, but beautiful.

All of my lettuce is really tall, but bitter too. So disappointing! When you let them go to seed they produce the most leaves. but they are pretty much inedible. Too bad.
Nice carrots though, mine are barely up - guess I planted them a bit late.
Greengirl says: I tried Dragon (purple) carrots this year. Only one survived and it was horribly bitter. Thursday morning, the Farmer’s Market on Nicollet had some great looking carrots. I didn’t know they could be harvested this early. Last year, I thinned my carrots late in the season and didn’t get a decent sized carrot until October.
We came home from a 10 day trip to Italy with our garden looking like a jungle and the lettuce looking big and grand. We harvested the entire lot, hoping to eat and give much of it away. My wife and I with cautious forks each put the first mix of Arugula and various lettuce into our mouths. It came out approximately .5 seconds later with a grimace on our faces. All was bitter compost material.
We ate a light meal and I headed out to tend to the Jungle. On a good note, your Hungarian Heart is doing awesome (over 3″ tall) in my garden patch and the Buran Polish pepper is looking great. Sad to say Jimmy Nardelo did not make it. He just was not up to the challenge.
Greengirl says: I’m glad you and Monika are back safe and sound. I’ll save a Jimmy Nardelo for you (only one of my plants made it). Your seeds are protected from the cats in a drawer. I’m going to wait for late summer/early fall before I plant. No more bitter greens for me!
