YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

Ah, three months ago, I hung my head in shame as my tiny tomato seedlings withered and wilted in our unseasonably hot spring. Their stems bent in the wind. Their green leaves vanished into translucent wisps.
Though all my bumbling, my Hungarian Heart has been stout of heart. It grew new leaves. It straightened its stem. It bloomed with little yellow flowers and actually produced fruit that looked like… well… a heart. Some weighed almost a pound in a half.
When I sliced through the dark pink skin, I expected a watery explosion of seeds and juice. Instead, my Wusthof knife melted through the fruit as if it were the velvety flesh of a perfectly ripe mango. The ruby slices were almost too pretty to eat.
My hungarian hearts were perfect for BLTs. They added great great body to salsa. Even the tomato haters at our house became converts.
As the weather cools, I wonder if the green tomatoes will ripen in time. I wanted perfect melons, instead I found the perfect tomato.
Isn’t it amazing how outside appearances hide the goodness inside?
I have learned to ignore the cracks and eat the tomato. My heirlooms were delicious this summer. I had my two older kids eating tomato sandwiches three times a week. My youngest who hates tomatoes, gulped down the cherry tomatoes.
Our apples are not treated and had spots all over the outside. But sliced them open and the inside was mostly bright white. We had an occasional worm, but cut around them. The flavor was delicious.
Did you feel kind of… weird… cutting into it? It REALLY does look like a heart!
I did! I felt like some mad scientist dissecting my homegrown hydroponic organs.
Hi Jaime, the plant of Hungarian Hearts you gave us did incredibly well too. We had so many compliments from friends and family for those 1+ lbs. tomatoes!
Thank you! The Italian.
The Jaune Flamme and Black Cherokee were the best in our garden, too. The BC’s did best with neglect and being overshadowed by sunflowers! The Jimmy Nardello peppers were perfect. I will defnitely be seeking seeds for these guys next year. (Seed Saver’s Exchange, right?) Thanks for getting me back into heirlooms. Jodi
