YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

Do you find yourself with too much to plant? Or do you wish you’d grown or bought more than you did? It’s time for the first annual Greengirls virtual plant swap. Here’s how we think it will work best:
If you have plants of any legal kind to share — for free — please post a brief description of them and your general location. Like this:
TO SHARE: Three extra heirloom fish peppers. Multicolored small peppers look very cool. Needs sun. Golden Valley.
If you are looking for a certain variety or cultivar, post that like this:
WOULD LIKE: Any kind of basil seedlings or plants. Will pick up at your convenience.
Then, using the magic of technology (uh, you know, the blog), just keep your eyes open for people to reply to your post. Yes, it could be a free-for-all. But then, that’s part of the fun.
I would love any kind of plants or bushes that anyone wants to get rid of. I’m kind of starting from scratch and need a variety. I will pick up at your convenience.
Would Like: This spring I removed all my hostas from my boulevard because all shade was sent packing after the loss of my boulevard elm tree. Now it’s bare and I need full sun plants to repopulate the area. I am looking for low to medium height Zone 4 perennial groundcovers, plant divisions, flowering plants, etc. I would like a mixture of plants for visual interest, etc. I’ll pick up within the metro area. Thanks!!!! ![]()
I am looking for any variety of Hosta plants. I really don’t want to mow much lawn this year! Please contact me by email and send some pictures if you have any. Thank you, Cami
Looking for cone flower plants and any type of hostas. My husband is recently reitired and he needs something to do. Why not get the yard in shape? Will pick up within the metro and suburbs.
I would love some hostas or any perrenial that needs sun. Any sun lovers with alot of color would be awesome. In the Minneapolis area would be best. Thank you, Dawn
I’m working on de-weeding a section of my side yard by filling it with yarrow. I’ll take yarrow in any color. I love that it will spread through the whole little garden bed! Feel free to contact me via email: lindsay.brice@gmail.com
Dear Garden goddesses,
I am a novice gardener who would LOVE any perennials, sun loving and shade needing, that you can spare! My home is in Pepin, WI but I’ll gladly pick up anywhere within the greater Metro at your convenience. Advice on care would be great as well.
Thanks in advance, Rita
TO SHARE: I have hostas that are out of control - varigated and solid color, large leaf and small leaf, in mostly sunny beds. Would love for someone to come help split and take some off my hands!
I also have some lamium I can part with, and **may** be willing to split my peonies if anyone is up for that task!
WOULD LIKE: I am a novice w/my first garden, someone to pass on some gardening knowledge to this ‘green’ girl would be excellent!
I’m in the Nokomis area, just east of Lake Hiawatha.
The City of Plymouth Spring Plant Swap is on June 4th 4:30 - 6:30 at the Plymouth Creek Center (14800-34th Ave N) parking lot. Very informal and relaxed, usually 60-80 gardeners looking to get rid of their extra plants. Great event for those looking to start a new garden. For more info, contact me via email: pbuck@ci.plymouth.mn.us
I have 7 or so eggplant seedlings of undetermined (mixed) variety, in varying sizes and states of health, along with a lone tomato seedling, which is either Better Boy or Brandywine. (I forget!) These guys need to go into the ground ASAP - they’re suffering in their little cups and I have no room for them. Anybody want ‘em? Email minneapolisgirl@gmail.com. I am in North Minneapolis.
I’d love to get in touch with AmyK. I need hostas and I’m also in the Nokomis area. I’m questioning how we get in touch with each other without posting phone or email addresses out for all and sundry to see, risking spam mail. Aw, heck, I’m already on too many spam lists
AmyK and anyone else with hosta varieties, please feel free to email me and put something about hostas in the subject line joolz@aol.com
Lindsey, I have about 6 square feet of white yarrow that I was about to dig up and throw away. That plant is an amazing spreader. Even dandelions have a rough time penetrating that mat of roots and ferny leaves. It was actually part of a seed mix that I planted 5 years ago and now only the white yarrow is left. There used to be some pink yarrow mixed in there but I am pretty sure that the white is mostly what I have. You are welcome to it. I’m in North Minneapolis. mmartin@ourhouseblog.com
We just did our annual plant swap in CARAG at the Urban Earth Co-op, I saw today that there is still a couple grocery bags of orange day lilies sitting out front. Swing by if you want ‘em - 910 West 36th, just west of Bryant.
I think we’ll do the plant swap a little earlier next year or do two of them, one in mid-April and one in mid-May. Dividing a lot of things earlier would be better.
I’d gladly give up a few solid green hostas - divided four of them up a few years ago and have given away dozens of them since then. 8 are ready to be dug out, we’re in CARAG (www.carag.org), bring your shovel/spade.
AmyK - don’t split the peonies now! I’ve divided them in the spring just when they start poking up and I’ve read you can do it in the fall too, like late September. Isn’t that correct? I think they’d just flop over if you divided them now.
AmyK, I would love some lamium and maybe some hostas. I also live in South Mpls and am free pretty much anytime this week. I can come dig them out! Email me! -Michelle
TO SHARE: I have a bunch of obedient plant that I am willing to share. This plant likes full sun and has spikes of pink flowers in late summer. Also I have some hardy yellow iris and purple iris that I can give away a start of.
Would Like: Ferns, hostas, or any other shade loving plant.
I can be contacted at lamunion@gmail.com
I was wondering about contacts… I am at meowindeed@lycos.com
I have some hardy geranium (aka cranesbill) that loves shade and sports little pink blossoms this time of year. It’s a spreader, but very easy to control. I’m near Hamline University and can be reached at midwaypete@gmail.com
If you want a sun-loving, aggressive spreader, I can give you some clara curtis mums. And I might just dig up some lamium or some false sunflower if you want that, too.
I’m not sure I want to share hosta until I am sure that mine are not infected with the hosta virus.
Swap made. Got some sweet woodruff for my hardy geranium. Thanks, Greengirls!
I have a TON of Lilly of the Valley I’m more then happy to dig up and share.
I would like a shade ground cover that can live in very acidic soil beneath a spruce tree. It needs to be a ready spreader and able to deal with the dry conditions under the tree.
Whee hee! I just want folks to know, I’ll delete everyone’s email addresses from the post June 1.
I am working on hooking up with one last person, but I had takers for my hostas and now can actually see my plant bed!!!
Thanks to Joolz and Michelle, and the Green Girls for helping me clean house!
I have flowering chives… beautiful, delicious, and they spread like no one’s business. Email me if you’re interested. I’m also looking for columbine, any type. I’m in western Mpls near Golden Valley. Thanks!
Oh wait, p.s. email is singingcat@gmail.com
Our pleasure! By the way, we will remove everyone’s email address next week. Darn spammers.
Just a note: A good way to get around the spam spiders while still giving out your email address is to write it like this: inothernews at gmail dot com
Or, if the comment line allows it, put your website address as mailto:emailaddress@emailaddress.com and surround it by brackets
