Luffa sprout!

I planted my luffa seeds two weeks ago, and yesterday they finally began to peek through the soil.

Yesterday (left) and this morning (right).

I cannot wait to grow my own bath sponges. It will take at least three months for the gourds to grow and another month for them to dry. I know sprouts are just the first baby step, but a little encouragement doesn’t hurt, right?

Grow little luffa, grow!

On the luffas, any idea how large the gourds will get? When I was in Thailand several years ago, I picked up a dried gourd/husk that I was told was a luffa. The interior was a miniature version of what we see in stores. I don’t know if the one I found was typical or smaller than average.

I think they can grow just about as big as any unattended cucumber. I still have some seeds if you’d like to give them a try!

I’m sure this is a very silly question, but what exactly is a luffa plant? Are we referring to the Luffas I use in the shower? Is that the same thing? I’ve seen many people refer to them at this blog site and I’ve always wondered. (and yes, as you probably know…I am a gardening novice. :)

I *am* growing Luffa sponges, you know, like the ones you find in a bath store. I always thought they were some sort of sea creature, but in fact they are a gourd from Asia. I have plenty of seeds if you’d like to try growing one. You can go here to learn more: http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden/ygbriefs/H235luffa.html
