YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

… Even in my garden! Ok, so I don’t have any lovely-but-oh-so-fussy hyrbrid tea roses. But I do have a hardy shrub rose that puts on a great show. I don’t have to spray it for black spot or use that barbaric Minnesota Tip method to overwinter it. I just toss a few inches of mulch around the base in late fall and my William Baffin rose comes back every year. Now, that’s my idea of rose gardening.

If you’re at all interested in roses, this is your weekend. The American Rose Society is holding its national convention in St. Paul. There are garden tours, a rose show and a class for beginners on growing roses.
If you can’t make the tour, check out the rows and rows of roses now in bloom at the Lyndale Park Rose Garden. Or take a look at some of Peggy Anne Montgomery’s favorite roses. Peggy Anne, a gal who knows her roses, works for Bailey Nurseries, a local plant breeder and developer. She said she’s is in love with: Little Mischief, Yellow Submarine and Ramblin’ Red. You can catch our interview with Peggy Ann in this week’s Dirt on Gardening podcast.
What are your favorite hardy roses? Or, if you’re a hard-core rose grower and tending hybrid teas, grandifloras and floribundas, tell us which ones and why.
I love all roses but I know they need at least 8 hours of sun and my yard is too shaded. I didn’t hear Peggy Ann mention that particular subject on the roses she recommended. Is that still the case even with the new, hardier roses?
Connie: How tall does your William Baffin get? I’ve heard some call it a climber, but others have said it’s just a tall shrub rose. And does it really bloom all season for you? I’m in Bloomington, and trying to sort through what can be expected from this rose right here in the Twin Cities. Thanks!
I have a shrub rose, I don’t know the variety. I had planted it several years ago. This year it was full of blooms and is over 6 feet tall and about 6 feet around and it is sending out sucker plants. Can I transplant these?
I don’t do anything to it. No mulch, no fertilizer, no protection and I’m in Chisago. Maybe it is because it is planted by the septic tank?
Tracy,
My William Baffin is about 7 feet tall now, but they can get even taller if you don’t prune. It is a true climber, as are some of the shrub roses. (That name is sort of a misnomer. Shrub roses can take the form of groundcovers, climbers or shrubs.) I don’t get constant bloom with the William Baffin, but if I deadhead after the flower are done blooming, I usually get a second bloom in late summer. Some of the newer shrub roses do offer recurrent blooms, tho.
Sharon,
I don’t know of many roses that can make do without less than 5 or so hours of sun, but you might want to check out this site on growing roses in shade:

Be forwarded: Not all of the roses they mention are hardy in our zone and would need to be tipped in winter. ‘Carefree Wonder’ might be your best bet.
I guess I could be classified as hard core although I’ve only “tipped” my roses once, when I had to move them–I just dug them up and buried them and then relocated them in the spring. I grow a mix of roses, shrub, climber and HT. Shrubs: John Cabot (I grow it as a climber) Therese Bugnet, Snow Pavement, Charles Albanel, Morden Centennial and Morden Blush. Climbers: Ramblin Red, Ilse Krohn Superior, Autumn Sunset HTs: Home and Family, Veteran’s Honor, Full Sail, Ink Spot, Opening Night, Mister Lincoln. Last year I added one of the famed David Austin English shrub Roses, Heritage, and I must agree, they are worth the trouble, it’s beautiful and fragrant. I protect the HTs and the Austin. The rest just have to lump it in the winter. I don’t like nasty chemicals so I spray the HTs and the Austin every 3 days or so with neem oil. It smells nice and gets rid of the fungal problems and most of the insects. When I slacked off last year I got a world of hurt with black spot and some other kind of nasty blight.
Wow. Margaret, you are a hard-core rose gardener. Good for you. I’d love to see your roses. Can you e-mail a pic?
How do I get these to bloom Have about 4 of them in all different spots trying to find out what they like. What am I doing wrong?
