Time to put the garden — and the blog — to bed

After a long season of dishing the dirt on everything from gardening garb to wacky ways to water, we Greengirls are throwing in the trowel. Now that most of us are putting our gardens to bed, we’ve decided it’s time to put our blog to bed, too.

Believe it or not, the secret to putting your garden to bed is mulch, mulch and more mulch. You don’t have to rip up all your annuals, but before the first snow fall, you should cover your bed in a 2 to 3 inch layer of leaves or grass clippings. It protects your soil and your perennials from winter weather and our spring freeze-and-thaws.

For those gardeners looking for a more detailed how-to, Connie Nelson and multimedia producer, Jenni Pinkley put together a marvy instructional video about winterizing your garden. Not only does she make it look easy, but Connie can really make a pair of a gardening gloves and a jean jacket look high-fashion.

Do you tidy up your garden for winter or wait until spring to rip up your unwanted annuals? We’ll keep the blog up through October, so please feel free to share tips about how you put your garden to bed. I know our first time gardeners will have a question or two.

It was wonderful to share this growing season with you. We’ve learned a lot from each other’s mishaps, mistakes — and most importantly, our sweet successes.

Please weigh in on topics you’d like us to tackle next spring, and as always… Happy Gardening!

Hi Greengirls! Thanks SO much for all the garden talk this summer. I checked you out nearly every day and enjoyed it all. I am also getting ready to tear out all the annuals, and plant spring bulbs. I am also going to do garlic this year, after many years of forgetting! See you next spring!

Like my neighbor sparklegirl says it was a wonderful season full of planing and replaning, way too plentiful morning glories, killer tomatoes, beautiful patio nights and just plain ole fun. Thanks for the good reads.

Thanks Judy, Sparklegirl and Seza! I think plain ol’ fun is the real reason we all garden :)

Thanks Greengirls for the fun reads all year long. I like the mix of gardening styles that all the Greengirls have. I grew up in the country with my parents having a Victory Garden the size of my city lot. I now live in South Minneapolis and trying not to plow up my entire lawn for vegetables is hard to resist.

I have plans in my email from a friend in Germany on how to make lettuce boxes that attach to the garage that I will send you pics of. A good winter project along with my stained glass to keep my mind off how I am going to expand my garden and still keep a 10′x10′ patch of grass.

We’d love to see your photos, Matt. I too have a secret plan to dig up the lawn.

Thursday was a great day for gardening. Sunny, high of 78, and low humidity. I put in a dozen or so plants in my sister-in-law’s garden, and I did some weeding in a neglected boulevard space.

It was good while it lasted. We won’t have this kind of day again for six or seven months.

I’m still picking peppers…even some strawberries. What’s with putting your gardens to bed so early???!!!

I’m still growing Basil and Rosemary. Then again I also wear a robe and live in a magical forest.
