I’ve never been a pansy person. Sure, they’re cute and all. But I’ve never really had a need for their sweet, silly faces in my garden. Until this year.
Pansies are among the handful of pretty flowering plants that can really take the cold. And they’re easy to find. And they’re cheap.
And so, I’ve got a potfull of pansies in the porch and another, bigger one by the front steps. Even though they look sweet and sorta silly, they look a heckuva lot better than the browned-out evergreens I had in those pots.
And my mood’s improved. Just planting a pot of pansies gave me faith that spring really is just around the corner.
It’s not too early to set a few pots of these outside right now? Woot, I’m buying them this week!!!! I love pansies.
I couldn’t stand it any longer… I bought two packs of pansies and a pack of brussels sprouts this weekend. Nothing’s been potted, but the purchase totally lifted my spirits.
Pansies should be able to take the cold — well the PRETTY cold. I haul my pansy planter in the porch if it’s going to get into the 20s at night. But otherwise I just leave ‘em outside and they seem to do fine.
‘Course, they hate the heat and kind of peter out when it gets into the 80s.(I just rip them out then and plant my warm-weather annuals.) But I’ll take any plant that can get me thru this April!
I can say it officially spring now that the Siberian Squill and Pushinka are blooming. It was a long time coming and to celebrate I planted lavender in a pot. It will also take down to the 20’s but I will take it into the 3 season porch if it gets below freezing.
Oh, I broke down too ladies. I started my indoor seedlings several weeks ago and the packet says that for Romaine Lettuce and Broccoli, they should be planted outdoors 4 weeks before last spring frost. Is that true or am I just overzealous?? It’s been a VERY long winter ![]()
I’m on my way to volunteer at Big Lake Elem. where my daughter teaches third grade. Each week I do a nature lesson and today my subject is pansies. I am going to plant a pansy bowl. I always plant pansies in two whiskey barrels at the end of my driveway. My neighbors always know Spring is here when they see the pansies. Around Memorial Day I plant additional flowers on the barrels.
Annie,
Not all veggies like the heat. This weekend, my cool season crops — snap peas, greens, carrots and brussel sprouts — are all going into the ground! It’s time to get my hands dirty!
Deb,
I’m jealous! My squill aren’t blooming yet. Heck, I’ve still got snow in my yard. Curses on a north-facing garden!
Has any one out there planted thornless rasberries>??
Are they as hardy as the everbearing Or I SHOULD SAY THORN ONES?
Are the thornless blackberries really as hardy and large berries or are they usally small and a few?
