Weekend weather blues

I was going to whip out my handy garden-chore checklist for the weekend. . . but the forecast changed my mind. Rain. Sleet. Snow? Oh my!

Instead of raking, getting rid of the last of the winter mulch or improving the (now soggy) soil, here’s the weekend homework assignment for us hardy northern gardeners: Planning.

Instead of doing, we can think about what we’re going to do — as soon as the weather turns. So I’m going to pull out all my dog-earred plant catalogs and a few of my favorite reference books and actually plan out what to put in my containers.

Usually, I just get a vague idea, go shopping — without a list, of course — and end up with something else. But not this year. This year, I’m going to have a plan. I’m going to make a list. And I’m going to stick to that list.

Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

Hey, we can all plan for the perfect garden, can’t we?

It has finally stopped snowing here in Bemidji. From my shovel gauge it looks as if about 12 inches of snow fell Friday and Saturday. I had a 3 foot snow drift in my driveway.

Nursing my blisters acquired from shoveling this morning…….sniff. This is depressing, truly depressing, even with the sunshine and warm temps today.

I got spring fever last week when it was decent out and bought some of that cute spanish lavender that has the neat winged flower heads. I even found really neat terra cotta pot at Savers to plant all 5 plants at once, real cheap for a big one like that. I have spent the last 5 days dragging the flippin’ thing in and out the front door as they will not take temps below 32 degrees! I now have aches in places ladies don’t talk about. COM’ON SPRING!

Oh, Carolyn - I hope everything melts quickly. We’d all like a few garden shovel, not snow shovel blisters this time of year.

You are too funny, Deb W - I’ve been trying to harden off my fennel, parsley and leeks. Seedlings in hand, I usually have to fight our feline escape artist from trying to get out the door. This weekend, they gave up completely and slept in a big cat pile on the couch.

Carolyn, I also feel REALLY bad for you folks up north! The only thing keeping me sane is looking at all my little seedlings under the lights indoors. The plants outside appear to have been stopped in their tracks!

I had so many new planting last year that my anxiousness this year is overwhelming.

I am so excited to see what will come back, and how it will perform.

I spent at least an hour looking for sprouts and shoots.

I found my mint the other day. It’s certainly giving the hostas a run for their money. Mojitio season can’t be too far behind!
