Do I really need pot of pineapple mint? Today I did.
Before the clouds rolled in, my coworker Amy and I took a stroll downtown. The farmers market wasn’t in full swing, but there were plenty of booths open to keep the the lunch rush happy. There wasn’t any local produce, but there were plenty of cold hardy herbs, flowers, honey and those fresh roasted almonds - Yum!
I also bought some flat leaf parsley and spearmint (I didn’t want my pineapple mint to get lonely on my desk. My absentmindedness has lead to some unfortunate — and very preventable — seedling deaths in my cubicle).
The parsley is for a patio pot. The two types of mint are for my “mojito patch” in the back yard. If only we could grow limes… Sigh.
Anyone else make it to the market?
I wish. The market on the mall is one of the things I miss most about Minneapolis. That and 7th Street Entry.
I used to work in the Grain Exchange building and pop over there for lunch and some grocery shopping all the time. Bought my habneros and herbs there one year when I was container gardening on Lyndale. The farmer’s markets in Seattle just don’t compare.
And neither do the dingy rock clubs, despite the city’s reputation.
How about potted dwarf lime trees that you can move inside during the winter?
Hey, povertyrich, I now work in the Grain Exchange! It’s such a cool building….I didn’t make it to the market. I figured there wouldn’t be a lot of local stuff, and it’s been so durn cool here I didn’t want to tempt myself with plant purchases just yet.
Isn’t the Pike Place market a good place to get stuff? I lived in Seattle in 1987 and thought it was pretty good.
I admire your restraint, Judybusy. Some vendors we already selling tomato seedlings, and let me tell you, they were flying off the racks. I wanted to throw myself in front to the table… “Stop! It’s too early (and too cold) for tomatoes! Go buy some roasted almonds.” But that would make me the only “nut” at the table.
Povertyrich: Pike Place market might feel a tad touristy, but they had the best selection of local mushrooms I’ve ever seen! (Note: I was there in October.)
Will morel season ever return to the northland?
Pike Place is great, and not crawling with tourists during the week. I should shop there more than I do. We get meat for our house Fero’s, one of the butchers in the Market.
