What’ve you got coming up?

scilla

Aside from a patch of scilla, I’ve got nothing for color in my garden right now. No crocus. No daffodils. Heck, my bleeding heart is only two bleedin’ inches out of the ground. I’m in an awful way. Anybody out there doing better?

To cheer myself up, I’m planning to go to the Living Green Expo at the State Fair’s Grandstand building. They probably won’t have a lot blooming, but they’ll have plenty of green — chefs cooking organic foods, sustainable treehouses, alternative vehicles, music and activities for kids.

If you don’t want to head out to the fairgrounds, check out our Living Green project that ran in the paper last Sunday. You can explore an interactive graphic on how to make your house green, take a quiz to see how green you are, see a video of how the mayor of Minneapolis lives green and more.

That may be all the color we get this weekend.

Crocus and Snowdrop are dying out, but my Merrill Magnolia is absolutely stunning right now and the tulips are starting to bloom. I just planted the annuals yesterday, white petunias, yellow marigolds, and assorted pansies.

I’ve got daffodils. My crocus are spent and so are the very early miniture iris. (I regret not putting them closer to my house as you need binoculars to see them unless you want to tramp through the snow)
My neighbor’s hyacinths are blooming

I brokedown and put in pansies and violas on Wednesday evening.

We have a veritable carpet of bluebells in one corner of the yard.

I’m just happy to see things turning green, and am content to wait another couple days for real blooms of color.

Carlotta,
I’m very impressed that you’ve got daffodils up. I don’t have any in my garden, but I know they’re late because the Daffodil Society of Minnesota has canceled it’s spring show, orginally set for May 3-4. The reason? The daffodils haven’t bloomed yet. Isn’t that sad?

Bluebells and irised are blooming right now. The daffodils and tulips are already done. I miss the daffodils already.

Wow, povertyrich, you must have a sunny site. Can you send some sun my way?

I have a carpet of squill and pushinka, the early (tiny) tulips are almost open and one brave white violet. Lots of green foilage: virginia bluebells, dutchmans breeches, bleeding heart 4″ high, the naked ladies have 8″ foilage, no buds on the daffodils yet. The star magnolia are blooming all around me but my pathetic specimen is on the north side of the deck and is just sitting there with tight buds. I need to move that thing….maybe where all the hybrid roses were before they all died this winter.

I planted two rose bushes last summer. One is (slowly) budding, the other is doing nothing. Is it likely dead, or do some bloom really late? It was supposedly one of the hardy ones, glad I kept my receipt.

If they have green stems and new buds then they are alive and will leaf out. If they are all grey and the wood inside the stems is dried up looking then the chances are they have not made it. My carpet roses and rugosa are leafing out but I cut back the climbers and hybrids to where I saw signs of life and nothing is happening. I think my winter cover was not enough as it matted down.
I have white, yellow and red rugosa rose bushes. The white and yellow are always slower to leaf out so be patient and look for any encouraging signs.

My species tulip, “Persian Jewel” popped open, as did “King Alfred” daffs, and bloodwort. The other daffodils’ buds have really shot up, though, and are getting fat!

Connie, povertyrich lives in Seattle. It’s always disheartening to read what s/he has coming up–weeks before us! p.r., can you take pity on us and not share? ;) Seriously, I love hearing what you are growing out there in zone 8. Or is it 9? That’s like *double* our zone!

povertyrich says:

Yeah, we’re zone 8-9 out here, depending. Seattle has a lot of freaky microclimates. Folks up on Capitol Hill get different weather from those of us down by the water in Ballard.

You can take some heart in that it doesn’t get nearly humid enough out here for my tomatoes to take off like they did when I was in Minneapolis. Last year, I didn’t get a single tomato until late August.

My magnolia tree is blooming! Looks pretty and sad at the same time (like a dead tree with white blossoms.)

Thanks for admitting to your zone 8-9ness, Povertyrich. I was starting to feel really bad!
