The ‘artist’ at work

The sun is shining this morning on a big, big canvas — my garden plot. Jim the garden tiller made his annual visit to our house last evening. He unloaded his John Deere and a half-hour later, the manure was turned in, the clumps were crumbled and the smell of earth filled the air.

I took a moment to think of the possibilities. Then, like an artist eager to start applying paint, I could hardly wait to get planting.

That’s my mission for today. In my paint set are onions, leeks, peas, carrots, beets, potatoes and a variety of lettuce and spinach. I went through my box of seeds last night, and have 20 kinds of lettuce to choose from. Huh. I wonder why I bought that many. One or two from here and a few from there added up, it seems. Either that, or the lettuce fairy really likes stopping by the house.

It won’t be long before I can add tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans and herbs to my edible painting, either. Normally, I’d think about planting those warm-loving seeds and seedlings in about a week. I’ll wait a little longer this spring, just to be sure they aren’t going to sit out and shiver. But I can’t wait too long. Company is coming and the “seed room” needs to be back to the guest room in two weeks.

What veggies are you planting? Or have you already planted them?

In the ground at Liberty Garden, we’ve got potatoes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, radishes, corn, beans, peas, broccoli, collards, lettuce, and spinach.

In pots in the ramshackle greenhouse we have four varieties of tomatoes, bell peppers, and three varieties of hot peppers.

I can’t wait to start eating them.

How long till you get the first harvest?

I think we’ll be putting our spinach in salads by the end of May, and add our lettuce and carrots by mid-June. Not sure about the rest. I’m hoping the new greenhouse gets us some tomatoes before August.

I’ve got peas, radishes, spinach, carrots, lettuce, broccolli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, strawberries and raspberries planted. Cole crops were started in the basement and are doing fine, peas and radishes got seeded 2 weeks ago and are just popping up. The berries have leafed out and lettuce, spinach, and carrots went in earlier this week with no signs of life just yet. Can’t wait to get my maters and peppers in the ground! Robyn, do you direct sow your herbs or buy plants? I have lots of seed but ran out of space inside, so I’m going to experiment with them outside in a week or so.

Wow, flytrap - you’ve got it going on!I’ll be very curious how the direct seeding goes. I start most of my own herb seedlings, but like you, I often run out of room. I can’t think of a reason that direct sowing shouldn’t work well, though.
